Dompet Dhuafa Republika is invited to The Third Conference of Humanitarian Organizations in the member states of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), which began in Doha to day. The purpose of the conference is to set up a code of ethics that will match international standards, Ismail A. Said, President Director Dompet Dhuafa has said in his teleconference session this morning.
From the explanation in the briefing session, OIC assistant secretary-general for humanitarian affairs Ata al-Mannan Bakheet said that such a code has become necessary in the light of “gaps in the work of the Islamic world’s humanitarian organizations”.
The two-day conference, organized by OIC and Qatar Charity, is attended by OIC secretary general Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and nearly 100 charitable and humanitarian organizations all over the Islamic world.
QC’s Vice-Chairman Abdullah bin Hussein al-Nimah said that the conference aimed at addressing the difficult circumstances facing the Muslim world.
“An increasing number of countries suffer from chronic or semi-chronic humanitarian crises due to wars and disasters, as well as poverty and unemployment”, he said, noting that humanitarian organizations have to strengthen their efforts, in order to provide support for those affected by crises.
Al-Nimah stressed the importance of strengthening the common humanitarian action in Islamic countries.
Expecting that some countries will “vanish” as a result of climate change, al-Nimah said that the organizations should overcome the obstacles that limited their effectiveness.
Bakheet pointed out that the conference was to pursue the efforts made at the two previous meetings held in Senegal and Libya in 2008 and 2009.
The current conference will focus on effective co-operation and co-ordination among OIC and the humanitarian and charitable organizations of its member countries.
“Better co-operation and co-ordination will help to provide better response to disasters and implementation of programs and projects on the field,” he said.
Bakheet further said that the code of ethics would take into account the Islamic cultural aspects.
The conference features meetings and workshops on the facts of humanitarian work in countries in great need for intervention such as Palestine, Sudan, Somalia, Niger, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.[]
