A man who visually impaired (blind) complained in one post of flood refugee in Jakarta. “I do not get food. Because food is not distributed directly to each refugee, “he explained.
It is admittedly very difficult for him as disabled. Limited motion made himself could not take the food queue.
When disaster comes, IDP groups and elderly citizens, such as the visually impaired were still forgotten. In fact, many things must be considered in dealing with the elderly volunteers.
Another example, how the volunteers t deal with elderly in the camp. Volunteer medical personnel should visit the elderly, not the other way around. Because the elderly are not easily back and forth to the place of health care if there is no accompanying.
Another thing to note is the temporary shelter or evacuation. Evacuation must be arranged in such a way for easy accessibility of its inhabitants, especially the vulnerable groups. In general, the location setting of refugees camp has no attention to comfort, safety, and accessibility.
Vulnerable groups should not be spared in the disaster. In fact, they are a group that should be prioritized.
Therefore, the volunteers actually have a comprehensive knowledge related to the handling of refugees vulnerable groups. They need special care because they have limitations. (Gie).
