Allah SWT bestows miracles upon every prophet and messenger He sends. Each of them has their own unique miracles. A miracle is an extraordinary ability that is beyond human comprehension, granted by Allah SWT to the prophets and messengers. One of the individuals chosen to be a prophet with a multitude of miracles was Prophet Musa (AS). We may be familiar with his miracle of the staff that could part the sea, but his miracles go beyond that. In this article, I will mention various miracles attributed to Prophet Musa (AS).
Miracles of Prophet Musa (AS)
The bestowal of miracles from Allah SWT to Prophet Musa has been explained in the Quran in Surah Al-Isra, verse 101, which states:
وَلَقَدْ اٰتَيْنَا مُوْسٰى تِسْعَ اٰيٰتٍۢ بَيِّنٰتٍ فَسْـَٔلْ بَنِيْٓ اِسْرَاۤءِيْلَ اِذْ جَاۤءَهُمْ فَقَالَ لَهٗ فِرْعَوْنُ اِنِّيْ لَاَظُنُّكَ يٰمُوْسٰى مَسْحُوْرًا
Meaning:
“And indeed, We gave Musa nine clear signs, so ask the Children of Israel [about] when he came to them and Pharaoh said to him, ‘Indeed, I think, O Musa, that you are affected by magic.'”
To further clarify that Prophet Moses (AS) was granted miracles by Allah SWT, it can be found in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 92, which states:
وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَکُمۡ مُّوۡسٰى بِالۡبَيِّنٰتِ ثُمَّ اتَّخَذۡتُمُ الۡعِجۡلَ مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِهٖ وَاَنۡـتُمۡ ظٰلِمُوۡنَ
Meaning:
“Indeed, Musa came to you with clear proofs, yet you took the calf [for worship] after him, and you were wrongdoers.”
Challenges always confronted Prophet Musa in his mission to invite people to worship Allah SWT. He faced many rejections, but he remained patient and obedient to Allah’s command. He continued to invite his people to believe in Allah SWT. Additionally, he had to deal with Pharaoh, an oppressive and tyrannical ruler. Many of the Children of Israel were disobedient and refused to follow the call of Prophet Musa (AS).
Prophet Musa received nine miracles, even though there were disputes among scholars. The miracles of Prophet Musa that have been collectively agreed upon include his staff, his hand turning radiant white, the storm, locusts, lice, frogs, and blood. The most well-known miracle is when Prophet Moses parted the sea with his staff.
Here’s an explanation of the miracles of Prophet Musa (AS):
Speaking Directly to Allah SWT
Prophet Musa (AS) had the ability to speak directly to Allah SWT. This occurred when he received his first revelation on Mount Sinai, also known as Mount Tur. This is mentioned in the Quran in Surah An-Nisa (Chapter 4), verse 164:
وَكَلَّمَ اللَّـهُ مُوسَى تَكْلِيمًا
“Wa kallamallahu Musa taklima.”
Meaning:
“And Allah spoke to Musa directly.”
In the Quran, in Surah Taha (Chapter 20), verses 9-10, Allah says:
وَهَل أَتاكَ حَديثُ موسى*إِذ رَأى نارًا فَقالَ لِأَهلِهِ امكُثوا إِنّي آنَستُ نارًا لَعَلّي آتيكُم مِنها بِقَبَسٍ أَو أَجِدُ عَلَى النّارِ هُدًى
“Hal ataaka hadisu Musa. Idz raa-a naaran faqaala li-ahlihimkutsu inni anastu naaran la’alli atikum minha biqabasin aw ajidu alannaari hudan.”
The translation of the provided text is as follows:
“Have you reached the story of Musa? When he saw a fire and said to his family, ‘Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire. Perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance.’ This event is known as the Word of God. On this mountain, he was also given a staff by Allah.
The Staff Turning into a Snake, Another Miracle of Prophet Musa
Prophet Musa was once challenged by magicians to demonstrate the power of Allah. It began with the magicians competing to turn ropes into snakes. Prophet Musa confronted them with the staff given by Allah, and in an instant, the staff turned into a giant snake that devoured the magicians’ snakes.
The Staff that Could Split the Sea
This is one of the most famous miracles of Prophet Musa. It began when the Children of Israel, who had turned to follow Prophet Musa, made Pharaoh angry. He learned that Prophet Musa and the Children of Israel were leaving Egypt for the Holy Land. Pharaoh, along with his soldiers, attempted to chase Prophet Musa’ caravan to the shores of the Red Sea. In a desperate situation, Allah commanded Prophet Musa to cast his staff into the sea. By the power of Allah, Musa split the sea with his staff. Prophet Musa’ followers were able to cross the sea.
Pharaoh, still on the seashore, tried to chase Prophet Musa’ group with the sea forming cliffs on either side. However, by the will of Allah, the sea closed back, with Pharaoh and his soldiers in the middle. Thus, Pharaoh’s group drowned in the middle of the Red Sea, while Prophet Musa’ group reached the eastern side of the Red Sea.

That is the story of Prophet Musa and the miracles he received. He preached with patience and determination to spread the teachings of Allah. He faced a challenging figure, a ruthless and oppressive ruler who often acted tyrannically toward his subjects. This story serves as a reminder for us to remain patient and keep striving amidst various pressures. Just like the story of Prophet Moses above, if it is Allah’s will, the efforts made will yield good results.”
