The Thrill of Trying Disaster Virtual Reality Simulator

JAKARTA — At the Jakarta Humanity Festival (Jakhumfest) 2023, Sunday (29/1/2023), at  Pos Bloc, Pasar Baru, Central Jakarta, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) presented a virtual simulation or Disaster Virtual Reality Simulation for visitors who attended.

Disaster Virtual Reality Simulation is one disaster education media that combines the sophistication of VR technology in disaster mitigation efforts to generate realistic disaster mitigation experiences.

According to Adi Sumarna of the Humanitarian Academy Team, the Disaster VR Simulation feature can be used as an educational medium for training simulations for prospective volunteers and the general public. The experience received by its users will be felt as if it were gained in the actual world via an artificial virtual world.

Adi Smarna explained how to use Disaster VR.
One of the visitors from Tebet, South Jakarta, Anisa tried disaster VR.

Users’ experiences are influenced not just by their sight and hearing but also by their other senses. Users will feel like they are at a live event in this manner. Because the incident can be perfectly reproduced in the virtual environment.

“The existence of this VR tool will make it easier for volunteers and prospective volunteers to simulate help. In addition, it is also an education for the community for disaster mitigation efforts because in this simulation, there is also a mode as a survivor when a disaster occurs,” explained Adi.

In addition to providing a simulation experience, the DMC team also explained the world of disasters and how to handle the three incidents.

Anisa, a visitor from Tebet, South Jakarta, stated that this is her first experience with virtual reality for natural disasters.

“So it’s exciting. We come to know, oh, if there is an earthquake, we have to take refuge under the table. Then, if there is a fire, it must be how. So it is easier to apply because this is in accordance with the latest technology, so it is easier to understand,” she said.

A deaf person also participated in a virtual simulation.
After changing, the visitors approached the DMC Dompet Dhuafa stand.

She also stated that the Disaster Virtual Reality Simulation experience was really interesting. After hearing the DMC team’s explanation of the disaster, she may quickly apply it virtually to this simulator. Before going on to live simulation, she believes virtual simulation is an excellent alternative.

“Disaster Virtual Reality Simulation, I believe, is interesting. The control system of the game is also interactive. We are requested to select the appropriate measures to be taken by assistance or volunteers. As survivors, we may also direct the procedures during a disaster.” She stated this after attempting disaster VR Simulation. (Dompet Dhuafa / Muthohar)
