Is it permissible to share intentions and acts of charity on social media? Here’s what you need to know.

Charity is a noble act encouraged in the Islamic faith. Giving to others, whether in the form of money, time, or effort, is one way to purify one’s wealth and earn rewards. However, with the advancement of technology and the rise of social media, a common question arises: Is it permissible to share our intentions or acts of charity on social media?

Charity from an Islamic Perspective

Charity is one of the most highly recommended acts of worship in Islam. Allah SWT states in the Quran:

“The parable of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a grain which grows seven ears, each ear having a hundred grains.” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 261)

Charity has many benefits, both for the recipient and the giver. A sincere gift brings blessings and goodness into our lives. However, charity given with the right intention is the most important, that is, solely for the sake of Allah.

One thing to keep in mind is the intention behind giving charity. Are we sharing on social media to inspire others to do good, or are we seeking praise? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave clear guidance on this matter.

“Verily, actions are based on intentions, and everyone will be rewarded according to their intentions.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

When we decide to share our intentions or acts of charity on social media, we need to examine our intentions. If the goal is to inspire others and encourage them to do good, then it is permissible. However, if the primary goal is to gain praise or attention, then the charity may be in vain.

Charity Given in Secret Is More Meritorious

In a hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to keep our acts of charity hidden:

“The best charity is that which is given in secret, so that the left hand does not know what the right hand has given.” (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)

This hadith reminds us not to boast about what we do. In Islam, deeds done in secret are more encouraged because they show sincerity and purity of heart.

However, sharing our alms on social media with the right intention, for example to encourage others to share and do good, can also be a positive thing.

During the time of the Prophet SAW, there was a story about a companion who gave charity without expecting praise from anyone. One of the most famous stories is about Abu Bakar RA. When the Prophet SAW asked for help for the Muslim community, Abu Bakar immediately donated all of his wealth.

It is narrated that:

“Abu Bakar came to the Prophet SAW with all of his wealth. The Prophet asked, ‘What have you left for your family, O Abu Bakr?’ Abu Bakr replied, ‘I have left for them Allah and His Messenger.’” (HR. Bukhari)

This story shows that Abu Bakr RA gave charity with sincerity and did not expect anything in return except the pleasure of Allah. He did not even boast about what he had given, even though he deserved praise.

Sharing Inspiration, But Keeping Your Intentions and Goals

Nowadays, social media allows us to share many things, including our intentions and acts of charity. For example, sharing our stories of charity can be a way to inspire others to do good deeds. Many social and humanitarian organizations, such as Dompet Dhuafa, use social media to spread messages of kindness and encourage others to share.

However, we must always ensure that our intentions remain sincere, that our goal is not to seek praise or recognition. In this case, sincere intentions are very important, because every deed done sincerely will bring great rewards from Allah.

Charity is an act of immense benefit, both for the recipient and the giver. In Islam, what matters most is the sincere intention and not seeking praise from others. Sharing our charity on social media is permissible, as long as the purpose is to inspire others and not to seek recognition.
