Amidst difficult and uncertain economic conditions, many people are beginning to feel anxious about the future. The prices of basic necessities are rising, incomes are stagnant, installments are still running, while savings are dwindling. Among all segments of society, the middle class bears the heaviest burden. They are not poor people who receive assistance, but they are also not strong enough to live without financial worries.
They work hard, save money, pay taxes, and shoulder many responsibilities. However, today, many of them feel that their struggles are never enough. The middle class is often caught in an exhausting dilemma. They want to keep moving forward, but economic realities force them to survive. The pressure of living expenses, job uncertainty, and concerns about their children’s future cause invisible fatigue.
From the outside, they appear stable, but inside, many feel tired and lost. In situations like this, Islam teaches one important thing: that sustenance never stops, it only changes hands, and Allah will not abandon servants who strive with patience and honesty.
The Middle Class and Surviving Amid Economic Challenges
In the midst of fast-paced modern life, the middle class often bears a double burden. They want to maintain their standard of living, but they also have to be realistic about their income. Many of them feel they have to appear strong, even though behind their smiles and routines, there is deep worry. Concerns about work, children’s school fees, or future savings often become a burden that cannot be expressed.
This anxiety is natural. However, in Islam, every difficulty brings an opportunity to learn about the meaning of sufficiency and gratitude.
Allah SWT says in Surah Asy-Syarh verses 5-6, “For indeed, with hardship comes ease, indeed, with hardship comes ease.” This verse is not a promise that life will be easy, but an affirmation that Allah always provides a way out for those who are patient and make an effort. Surviving difficult times is not only about money, but also about managing one’s heart.
Strong people are not the richest, but those who are most calm in the face of change. When many things feel out of control, what needs to be maintained is one’s perspective. That working is worship, saving is wisdom, and sharing is a form of trust in Allah’s promise.
Adjusting Intentions and Mindset in Difficult Times
Amidst an uncertain economic situation, the first step to survival is to readjust one’s intentions. Sustenance does not come from salary or business, but from Allah SWT. This belief makes a person less anxious when conditions change. The Prophet Muhammad SAW said, “If you truly put your trust in Allah, Allah will provide for you as He provides for the birds. They leave in the morning hungry and return in the evening full.” (HR. Tirmidzi)
Birds do not remain idle; they continue to strive every day. However, they do not worry excessively because they are confident that Allah will provide for their needs. The same applies to humans. We still need to strive, but we must learn to trust in Allah’s decree. When the heart is calm, the mind becomes clear, and it becomes easier to find a lawful and blessed solution.
The middle class that survives is not those who have everything, but those who are able to adapt. They learn to live simply without losing their dignity, refrain from a consumptive lifestyle, and continue to do good even in limited circumstances. Because in truth, blessings do not come from the abundance of wealth, but from sincerity in managing it.
For many people, blessings may sound abstract. In fact, blessings are real things that make life feel sufficient and peaceful, even if one’s income is not large. There are people who have abundant wealth but live narrow lives, and there are also those who have modest incomes but generous hearts. This is the meaning of blessings that is often forgotten amid the hustle and bustle of the economy.
One way to maintain blessings in difficult times is to continue sharing. Zakat, infaq, and alms are not only social obligations, but also spiritual balances. Allah SWT says in Surah Saba’ verse 39, “And whatever you spend, Allah will replace it; and He is the best of providers.” This verse gives hope that nothing is lost from the wealth that is spent for good. In fact, by giving, Allah promises to replace it with something better.
In difficult economic conditions, sharing may feel difficult. However, it is precisely at times like these that the value of charity becomes most significant. Giving in times of hardship is a testament to faith and steadfastness. Dompet Dhuafa believes that no matter how small the donation, if it is given sincerely, it can open the doors of sustenance and foster a deep sense of gratitude. Zakat and charity are not just about helping others, but also about healing one’s own anxiety.
From Surviving to Thriving
An economic crisis is not the end of everything. For those who are willing to learn and adapt, difficult times can actually be a turning point for growth. Many middle-class families are beginning to find new ways to increase their income, start small businesses, or strengthen social networks in their communities. They are learning not only to survive, but also to thrive.
Dompet Dhuafa continues to strive to be part of this change by managing zakat, infaq, and waqf so that they are not only consumptive, but also productive. Through various economic, educational, and social empowerment programs, the zakat collected is distributed as business capital, skills training, and assistance for families affected by the crisis. From this, a new strength emerges, that mutual cooperation and sincerity can foster hope amid uncertainty.
No one can guarantee when the economy will return to stability. However, everyone can choose to remain calm and hold on to their values of faith. Because in truth, peace of mind does not come from financial certainty, but from the belief that Allah is sufficient for anyone who depends on Him.
If today feels difficult, don’t just look for ways to survive, but also look for ways to remain grateful. Make zakat and almsgiving a form of effort to purify your wealth and heart, so that life feels more spacious. Because every good deed you do today will grow into blessings in the future.
When the economy is uncertain, don’t just be strong with your energy, but also with sincerity. Persevere with faith, move with prayer, and share with love. Because in the midst of the world’s uncertainty, sharing is the only certainty that Allah will always provide sustenance for those who believe.
