What is the ruling on eating one’s own sacrificial meat?

Hewan Kurban

Several questions regarding the law of eating sacrificial meat among Muslims are still circulating. As the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah approaches, it is important to know certain laws for those who wish to perform the Qurban ritual on Eid al-Adha, especially the prohibitions. There are two types of Qurban rituals: sunnah and nazar.

The rules of the qurban ritual are adjusted to specific conditions. According to NU Online, the qurban ritual is sunnah ‘ain for those who are not married. Sunnah ‘ain is a sunnah act intended for every Muslim.

For those who have a family and are able to perform the ritual, the rule becomes sunnah kifayah. Sunnah kifayah is a ritual that should be prioritized and performed without obligation. In this ruling, if one member of the family performs qurban, all members will receive the reward, but the obligation to perform qurban for the rest of the family members is waived.

It is also recommended that everyone who performs qurban eat the meat first before distributing it to relatives, friends, family, and the poor.

The Sharia Council of Dompet Dhuafa, Ustadz H. Ahmad Fauzi Qosim, S.S., M.A., M.M. explains that it is recommended for the owner of the sacrifice to eat the sacrificial animal. In fact, some scholars state that the owner of the sacrifice is obliged to eat a portion of the sacrificial animal. This is based on the words of Allah:

فَكُلُواْ مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُواْ الْبَآئِسَ الْفَقِيرَ

“Eat thereof and feed the needy.” (Qs. Al-Haj: 28)

The Law of Eating Sacrificial Meat if it is a Vow

However, qurban worship can become an obligatory act of worship if it is in the form of a vow. This means that if a Muslim makes a promise to Allah SWT that if their wish is granted, they must perform qurban and donate the entire amount.

Dompet Dhuafa needs your help so that more people in remote areas of the country can consume healthy qurban meat. In fact, according to IDEAS research in 2021, the upper class consumes 51 times more meat than the average population in the lowest decile (the poorest class).

Due to this gap, Dompet Dhuafa presents the Tebar Hewan Kurban program as a breakthrough for the welfare of the community while also raising the class of farmers in remote areas of Indonesia.
