The month of Muharram is one of the holy months considered sacred by Muslims. During this month, Muslims are instructed to increase their worship in order to get closer to Allah SWT. During the time of the Prophet, when entering the month of Muharram, Muslims were prohibited from waging war or committing acts that resulted in sin. This month is also well known for its various virtues. What are the virtues of the month of Muharram?
1. The Multiplication of Rewards and Sins
Be careful when you want to sin. Especially if the sin is committed during the month of Muharram. In this month, the sins committed will be counted multiple times. So, even the smallest sin will definitely make the scales of good deeds heavy. Especially if the act is a grave sin.
At the same time, good deeds performed during the month of Muharram will also be multiplied. This is why during the month of Muharram, devout Muslims will take advantage of the moment by doing as much good as possible. They are also more careful not to commit actions that are displeasing to Allah.
2. Virtue of the Month of Muharram: One of the Four Sanctified Islamic Months
Islam has 4 very sacred months. These months are the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, the month of Rajab, the month of Dhu al-Qa’dah, and the last is the month of Muharram. The sacredness of the month of Muharram is enshrined in Surah At-Taubah verse 36 in the Qur’an.

The 4 holy months are called the haram months. During these months, Muslims are strictly forbidden to shed blood. They are also instructed to practice good deeds and worship with sincere intentions to draw closer to the Creator.

3. The Best Time to Practice Fasting
Apart from the month of Ramadan, the month of Muharram is also the perfect month to practice fasting. In Islamic teachings, fasting means restraining all lust from dawn to sunset. During fasting, Muslims are also instructed to avoid all actions that can break the fast.
Whoever performs the act of worship of fasting during the month of Muharram will certainly receive excellent rewards. According to the hadith narrated by HR Muslim, the fasting of Muharram is the best act of worship of fasting after the month of Ramadan. In addition, Ali bin Abi Talib also explained a tradition which states that whoever fasts Muharram, Allah will accept the repentance of that community.
“The best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Allah – Muharram. Meanwhile, the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer.” (HR. Muslim no. 1163, from Abu Hurairah)
4. A Month with a Special Ashura Day
Another advantage of the month of Muharram is that it has the day of Asyura. Asyura is a very special and historic day in Islam. Asyura falls on the 10th of Muharram and Muslims are advised to fast the day before (Tasu’a Fast). This fast is used as a distinction between the way the Jews and Christians celebrate the arrival of Asyura.
A Historic and Glorious Month
Another virtue of the month of Muharram is that it has special significance for the prophets in Islam. According to the book Al-Nawadzir written by Sheikh Sihabuddin bin Salamah Al-Qolyubi, there are 10 prophets whose status was elevated by Allah SWT in the month of Muharram. The prophets are: Prophet Adam as, Prophet Idris as, Prophet Noah as, Prophet Ibrahim as, Prophet David as, Prophet Solomon as, Prophet Ayub as, Prophet Yunus as, Prophet Jacob as, and Prophet Isa as.
