Characteristics of a Good Country According to Islam in the Quran

In Islam, the state is not merely a political entity, but a vessel for upholding justice, protecting the people, and spreading the mercy of Allah SWT. The Quran provides guidelines on how a country can become a good, prosperous, and blessed nation.

Here are some of the characteristics of a good country according to Islam in the Quran that we can reflect on together.

1. A Just and Trustworthy Nation

QS. An-Nisa [4]: 58

“Indeed, Allah commands you to convey the trust to those who are entitled to receive it, and when you judge between people, judge with justice…”

This verse emphasizes that a country will be good if its leaders are trustworthy and capable of upholding justice. Without justice, the people will live in misery and be far from blessings.

2. A Prosperous and Grateful Country

QS. Saba [34]: 15

“… (Your country) is a good country and (your Lord) is the Most Forgiving Lord.”

This verse describes the prosperous country of Saba’ because its citizens are grateful for Allah’s blessings. According to Islam, a good country is one that is able to utilize its resources wisely so that its people live in prosperity.

3. A Country that Upholds Deliberation

QS. Asy-Syura [42]: 38

“…while their affairs (are decided) by deliberation among them…”

Deliberation is one of the important characteristics of an Islamic state system. A good country is a country that gives space for the people to express their opinions and involves the community in decision-making.

4. A Country that Upholds Morality and Ethics

QS. Al-A’raf [7]: 96

“If the inhabitants of the country had believed and been righteous, We would have showered them with blessings from heaven and earth…”

This verse emphasizes that the blessings of a country depend on the faith and piety of its inhabitants. A good country not only develops economically, but also upholds the morals, character, and spiritual values of its people.

5. A Country that Upholds Social Solidarity

QS. Al-Hashr [59]: 7

“…so that wealth does not circulate only among the rich among you.”

The Quran reminds us of the importance of fair distribution of wealth. A good country is one that cares for the poor, prevents inequality, and ensures that every citizen has the right to a decent life.

From these verses of the Quran, it is clear that the characteristics of a good country according to Islam are that it is led fairly, its people are prosperous and grateful, it upholds deliberation, maintains morals, and prioritizes social justice.

Dompet Dhuafa believes that building a good country is not only the responsibility of the government, but also of the entire community. By paying zakat, infaq, and sadaqah, we strengthen social solidarity and contribute to the realization of a blessed country.
