Verses from the Quran about Good Leaders

In Islam, leadership is not just a matter of position, but a great responsibility for which one will be held accountable before Allah SWT. A leader must be able to bring prosperity and justice, as well as set an example for his people.

The Quran mentions many times the qualities and characteristics of a good leader. By understanding these verses, we can learn how a leader should behave in carrying out his responsibilities.

1. A Trustworthy and Just Leader

QS. An-Nisa [4]: 58

“Indeed, Allah commands you to convey the trust to those who are entitled to receive it, and when you judge between people, judge with justice…”

This verse emphasizes that a leader must be trustworthy and fair. Fairness is the foundation of good leadership, regardless of a person’s position or status.

2. Leaders Who Set an Example

QS. Al-Ahzab [33]: 21

“Indeed, there has been in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for you, for those who hope for (the mercy of) Allah and (the coming of) the Day of Judgment and who remember Allah often.”

The Prophet Muhammad SAW is the best example of leadership. This verse reminds us that good leaders are those who emulate the characteristics of the Prophet: compassionate, humble, and firm in the truth.

3. Leaders Who Are Not Unjust

QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 124

“… Allah said: ‘I will make you a leader for all mankind. Ibrahim said: ‘And also from my descendants? Allah said: ‘My promise does not include the unjust.

This verse shows that leadership is not given to the unjust. A good leader must avoid injustice, because injustice will only bring harm to the people.

4. Leaders who prioritize deliberation

QS. Asy-Syura [42]: 38

“And (for) those who respond to their Lord and establish prayer, and whose affairs are decided by mutual deliberation among themselves; and who spend out of what We have provided them.”

Consultation is an important principle in Islamic leadership. A leader must not be authoritarian, but must be willing to listen to the opinions and input of his people.

5. Leaders who bring prosperity

QS. Saba [34]: 15

“Indeed, for the people of Saba’ there was a sign (of God’s power) in their dwelling place, namely two gardens on the right and left. (They were told): Eat from the sustenance that your Lord has bestowed upon you and be grateful to Him. (Your land) is a good land and (your Lord) is the Most Forgiving.”

This verse describes an ideal country: prosperous, peaceful, and led by grateful people. A good leader will bring prosperity to his people, both physically and spiritually.

These verses from the Quran show that leadership in Islam is closely related to the values of trust, justice, deliberation, and exemplary behavior. A good leader does not only think about power, but also the welfare of the people and the pleasure of Allah SWT.

Dompet Dhuafa believes that good leadership will create a strong society that is mutually supportive and cares for one another. Just as zakat and alms are managed with trustworthiness, good leadership is also an important pillar in realizing social justice.
