BADUNG, BALI —— The Disaster Management Center (DMC) of Dompet Dhuafa participated in the 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) 2022, which was held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC), Badung Regency, Bali Province, on Wednesday and Thursday (May 25 & 26, 2022).
As the host of the 7th GPDRR, Indonesia carried the theme “Strengthening Partnerships Towards Sustainable Resilience,” with the slogan “Gotong royong Tangguh Bencana” (Mutual Cooperation for Disaster Resilience). The GPDRR is also expected to increase the capacity of local and national actors to uphold local wisdom in disaster preparedness for sustainable resilience.

DMC Dompet Dhuafa, as a disaster management agency, always implements programs within a disaster cycle, namely pre-disaster, during disaster, and post-disaster. In the pre-disaster stage, DMC has programs for Disaster Response Areas, Climate Change Adaptation, and Disaster Mitigation Education.
In the Disaster Response Area program, DMC establishes a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) forum for local communities, maps disaster-prone areas, creates seasonal calendars, and develops follow-up plans (RTL) for long-term contingency and mitigation.

Then, in the Climate Change Adaptation program, DMC conducted campaigns on environmental awareness to people from all walks of life. This was done so that the perspective of environmental awareness could be adopted by all members of society, from children to adults. In addition, DMC also developed disaster mitigation-based ecotourism by optimizing the local wisdom of the local community.
Finally, in the Disaster Mitigation Education program, DMC held soft skills and hard skills training on disasters for the wider community. Starting from vertical rescue, water rescue, and jungle rescue. In addition, DMC also provided training in emergency response such as disaster volunteer post management, public kitchen setup, and medical first aid training.

“Thank you to the organizers for allowing us to participate in this year’s GPDRR event. This is an opportunity for stakeholders and humanitarian workers in the field of disaster management to collaborate and strengthen the intervention programs that will be proposed in disaster response,” explained Haryo Mojopahit, Chief Executive of DMC Dompet Dhuafa, after attending the GPDRR.
The GPDRR meeting was divided into several main sessions, namely the High Level Dialogue, Ministerial Roundtable, and Side Events. Some of the topics discussed at the High Level Dialogue were “Where do we stand? Global and regional perspectives on implementing the Sendai Framework” and “Strengthening Disaster and Climate Risk Governance at National and Local Levels.” Meanwhile, the topics discussed at the Ministerial Roundtable included “Scaling-up Disaster Risk Reduction to Tackle the Climate Emergency.”

“We are all very happy to see Bali hosting such a large-scale face-to-face event today. I have been informed that around seven thousand participants have registered for today’s meeting. This is proof of the strong commitment and efforts made by the Indonesian government, under the leadership of President Joko Widodo, to combat Covid-19 and put the country back on the road to recovery,” said Abdulla Shahid, President of the UN General Assembly.
Furthermore, Abdulla Shahid invited and asked the world to follow Indonesia’s example of proactively investing in disaster resilience.
“Indonesia is a disaster-prone country, but it can proactively invest in disaster management, so there is much to learn from the model that Indonesia has implemented. The COVID-19 pandemic has proven that this is what is referred to as a disaster risk,” he said.

Meanwhile, Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said in his speech that Indonesia is a disaster-prone country, prone to earthquakes accompanied by tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and even forest fires. However, with various efforts, these disasters can be overcome and minimized.
“Indonesia is a disaster-prone country. In 2022 alone, as of May 23, there have been 1,613 disasters. On average, there are 500 earthquakes per month, both small and large,” said the President.

Through this event, DMC Dompet Dhuafa will present a disaster mitigation program that focuses on one disaster-prone area in Indonesia. The program will involve more partners and volunteers and will reach a wider range of beneficiaries who will be assisted.
“In the near future, DMC Dompet Dhuafa will intensify its coastal-based mitigation program. The program is still under discussion, but stay tuned for the launch date,” concluded Haryo. (Dompet Dhuafa / DMC)
