JAKARTA —-— At a press conference regarding the latest developments concerning the nine Indonesian delegates detained by Israel while participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2.0 humanitarian mission to Gaza, GPCI Steering Committee member Irvan Nugraha stated that as of Wednesday (May 20, 2026), communication with the nine Indonesian delegates arrested by Israeli forces remains cut off.
Although several videos circulating on social media show the flotilla participants have been taken to Israeli territory, his team has not yet been able to confirm the condition of these Indonesian citizens.
“We are still having difficulty communicating and clearly determining the location or condition of our colleagues. The circulating videos do show the participants are already in Israeli territory, but we cannot yet confirm the condition of the Indonesian citizens,” said Irvan Nugraha on Wednesday (May 20, 2026) evening at the Dompet Dhuafa Cultural Center in Jakarta.
According to him, this situation is also affecting the families of the delegates, who are still waiting for news from their loved ones. GPCI continues to urge the Indonesian government to strengthen diplomatic efforts to expedite the release of these humanitarian volunteers.
GPCI also provided updates on communication efforts, diplomatic steps, and ongoing legal support being undertaken to facilitate the release of the Indonesian delegates.
GPCI also highlighted the circulation of narratives claiming that the delegates were not kidnapped. Irvan emphasized that the humanitarian volunteers had been intercepted and forcibly taken to areas outside the primary destination of the humanitarian mission to Gaza.
“We see an effort to divert humanitarian volunteers and journalists from the mission’s primary objective, which is to break through the Gaza blockade and assist the Palestinian civilian population,” he said.
Meanwhile, GPCI Advocacy Officer Arief Rahmadi Haryono stated that GPCI will soon hold another meeting with the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, specifically the Directorate for the Middle East and the Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens Abroad, to discuss diplomatic steps regarding the detention of the nine Indonesian delegates.
“We hope for clarity regarding the diplomatic steps the Indonesian government will take to ensure the safety and release of the delegates,” said Arief.
In addition to meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, GPCI is also scheduled to hold a coordination meeting with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), civil society organizations, humanitarian agencies, and various elements of civil society to discuss developments regarding the situation of the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 delegates.
In her online statement, Maimon Herawati explained that all participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla had previously signed a power of attorney granting legal authority to an international legal team collaborating with the Global Sumud Flotilla network. This legal team is currently in Ashdod to provide legal support to the detained participants.
“The legal team has requested access and is currently going through administrative procedures to ensure the well-being of the participants,” said Maimon Herawati.
Closing the press conference, GPCI reiterated that the primary mission of the Global Sumud Flotilla is to break the Gaza blockade and open access to humanitarian aid for the Palestinian civilian population. GPCI also urged the Indonesian public to continue providing moral support and prayers for the safety of the Indonesian delegates who remain in detention. (Dompet Dhuafa)
