A Piece of Travel Story Down the Collapsed Mosque by the Impact of the Cianjur Earthquake (Part One)

CIANJUR, WEST JAVA — The drizzle of rainwater that was falling that afternoon, Wednesday (4/1/2023), did not discourage Dompet Dhuafa team to look at mosques that were damaged and collapsed due to the earthquake with 5.6 magnitudo that shook Cianjur Regency, West Java, on Monday (21/11/2022) afternoon.

The slippery lands and streets were felt as the team stepped one foot after another on them. At that time, all residents began to prepare to wait for the sound of the Maghrib’s call to pray. Several teenagers were seen sitting while greeting the people passing by.

The Dompet Dhuafa team found a mosque that was severely affected by the earthquake. Upon arriving at the mosque grounds full of rubble from the collapsed building, a man in batik with a white peci on his head walked over. Right in front of the door of the mosque whose condition was so concerning, they met and greeted each other.

Introductions were done. Graciously, the man said his name was Ade, a society leader from Kampung Rancapincung, Cibulakan Village, Cugeunang, Cianjur, West Java. On the other hand, one by one, the Dompet Dhuafa team introduced themselves, they were Zaini Tafrikan, Muhammad Irvan, and Nur Hafifah.

Next, Ade introduced the mosque that stood beside him under the name of Masjid Al Barokah. This mosque is integrated with a small cottage, namely Pondok Syirkatul Fiqriyah.

The conversation then went on by exchanging stories. Ade said because the mosque was so old, the mosque was not known for sure when exactly it was built. This mosque has been around for a long time when he was in early age.

Mr. Ade pointed to the part of the mosque that was most severely damaged

Various religious activities in this mosque have been going on for a long time since Ade was a child. Among the activities he often participated in, in addition to the 5-time prayers and the Friday prayer, there were also the commemoration of Islamic holidays, Islamic lectures for ikhwan (men), Islamic lectures for akhwat (women), Quranic education for children, and citizen deliberations.

“Since a young age, I have studied here, have studied the Quran here, have prayed here. But now it’s sad to see this mosque was destroyed,” he said.
