DD South Sulawesi Ready to Distribute 500 Qurbani Animals to Remote Areas to Help Underprivileged Communities Affected by Disasters

GOWA, SOUTH SULAWESI —— In anticipation of Eid al-Adha, Dompet Dhuafa South Sulawesi (DD Sulsel) is ready to launch the Tebar Hewan Kurban (THK) program, which will reach 13 districts in two provinces, South Sulawesi and West Sulawesi (Sulselbar), with 5,000 beneficiaries. This readiness was marked by a press conference at the DD Sulsel Livestock Village in Macanda, Gowa District, on Wednesday (June 15, 2022).

The criteria for the distribution locations are outlying, disadvantaged, and frontier (3T) areas that experience a deficit of sacrificial meat, areas with Muslim minorities, post-disaster areas, and several remote areas experiencing food crises. The selection of these areas reflects Dompet Dhuafa‘s commitment to distributing sacrificial meat equitably to underprivileged residents who struggle to access meat, as well as efforts to minimize the accumulation of sacrificial meat in urban areas.

As shown by research from the Institute for Demographic and Poverty Studies (IDEAS), Indonesia’s potential for qurbani is not evenly distributed, reflecting the income gap between regions in Indonesia, especially between urban and rural areas. In 2021, the potential for qurbani reached 2.19 million people as qurbani donors (Shohibul Qurban) with 414,000 cows and 1.26 million goats. This projection resulted in 104,900 tons of qurbani meat worth 18.23 trillion rupiah.

Looking at these figures, Indonesia’s potential in the qurbani sector is very significant. If managed properly, qurbani can become an economic force that not only improves the welfare of the mustahik but also empowers local livestock farmers. This is what Dompet Dhuafa applies in the THK program as an effort to improve food security.

DD South Sulawesi plans to distribute 500 sacrificial animals on July 9-12, 2022, which coincides with Eid al-Adha and Tasyrik Day. The 500 sacrificial animals include standard goats, premium goats, and cows.

For THK 2022, Dompet Dhuafa carries the tagline #KurbanJadiManfaat (Sacrifice is Beneficial) with three main values: first, because sacrifice is a commandment prescribed by Islam as a form of loyalty to Allah SWT. Second, THK has social value because it invites the community to participate in the good deeds of sacrifice and distribute it to remote areas. And third, it has economic value, namely that Dompet Dhuafa through THK has empowered farmers and ranchers to become more prosperous.

In the 2022 THK Dompet Dhuafa program, Dompet Dhuafa invites the community to participate in qurbani even in the midst of the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak. The public need not worry, as Dompet Dhuafa has collaborated with partners to conduct quality control on sacrificial animals to ensure their health and compliance with Islamic law for sacrifice. In addition, Dompet Dhuafa also adheres to all instructions and regulations for the implementation of sacrifice by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).

The added value of the THK Dompet Dhuafa program is the distribution of meat using an eco-friendly system, whereby sacrificial meat is wrapped in bamboo baskets, telo bags, banana leaves, or teak leaves, in accordance with local customs. This ensures that the sacrifice ritual does not pollute the environment.

For your information, since 1994, Dompet Dhuafa has been a zakat institution that has been assisting the community in performing qurbani through the THK program. This is done by DD Sulsel as an effort to increase the piety of Muslims in welcoming Eid al-Adha, instilling an attitude of sharing with others, and also to increase the blessings of their wealth.
