DMC Responds to Tornado Disaster in Yogyakarta

GUNUNG KIDUL, YOGYAKARTA –— Dompet Dhuafa’s Disaster Management Center (DMC) has mobilized its disaster response team to address the tornado in Yogyakarta. The DMC team has been on the ground in the affected area since last Tuesday (February 22, 2022) in Jonge Hamlet, Pancarejo Village, Semanu Subdistrict, Gunung Kidul Regency, Yogyakarta.

“Currently, the urgent needs of the affected residents are ready-to-eat meals, hygiene supplies, basic food items, and tarps,” explained Badar, a member of Dompet Dhuafa’s Yogyakarta response team, when interviewed on-site on Friday (February 25, 2022).

The team then dispersed to several locations, namely Mijaha, Jl. Mijahan, Sambirejo Hamlet, and Jelok Hamlet in Semanu Subdistrict. A total of 21 people were affected, 6 were injured, and there were no fatalities. A total of 527 homes, 6 places of worship, 1 kindergarten, 2 elementary schools, and 3 village halls were damaged.

The Dompet Dhuafa DMC team, together with a coalition of volunteers, is helping to repair public facilities and several residents’ homes. In addition, the team has set up a Warm Shelter.

“DMC Dompet Dhuafa plans to provide Psychological First Aid (PFA) and continue cleaning up homes and local facilities. We will then resume our ‘Pos Hangat’ services,” concluded Haryo Mojopahit, Chief Executive of DMC Dompet Dhuafa.
