Dompet Dhuafa Distributes 100 Food Packages in Turkey-Syria Earthquake-Affected Areas

HATAY, TURKIYE — With the help of Dompet Dhuafa’s good friends, Disaster Management Center (DMC) Dompet Dhuafa team successfully sent 100 food packages to survivors of the Turkey-Syria earthquake in Antakya District and Kirikhan District, Hatay Province, Turkiye, on Saturday (11/02/2023).

Amid cold weather and uncertain conditions, the DMC Dompet Dhuafa team with volunteers and survivors of the Turkish-Syrian earthquake jointly distributed 100 packages of necessities.

“Approximately 100 food packages were distributed in two earthquake-affected districts,” reads a report by Jovan Pradana, a Dompet Dhuafa volunteer from Turkiye.

It can be seen that based on monitoring in the field, survivors opened makeshift tents simply, like cloth, and even truck containers were transformed into temporary places for survivors. Coupled with the cold weather, survivors use their privately owned lingering clothes to keep their bodies warm and survive the cold.

“Currently, other teams are trying to participate in the Evacuation-SAR action of the Turkey-Syria earthquake victims,” explained Haryo Mojopahit as Chief Executive of DMC Dompet Dhuafa, through a short message.

As of February 11, 2023, the death toll from this magnitude 7.8 earthquake reached 24,000. In Turkiye, the death toll has risen to 20,665, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). Meanwhile, in Syria, more than 3,500 people were killed as reported by Aljazeera.

It said nearly 93,000 survivors had been evacuated from the earthquake zone in southern Turkey. As many as 870,000 people are in dire need of food in both countries and 5.3 million people are homeless in Syria.
