Dompet Dhuafa Helps Accelerate Flood and Landslide Management in Lumajang

LUMAJANG, EAST JAVA — Dompet Dhuafa East Java and the Disaster Management Center (DMC) deployed personnel to help accelerate handling after the cold lava flood in Lumajang, Saturday (08/07/2023). Currently, the team is helping to assess the affected population and opening a Warm Post at the evacuation point of the Jarit Village Office, Kebonsari Hamlet, Jarit Village, Candipuro District.

“Currently, the heavy water (flood) is still high,” said Rizal Rahmat, the East Java Dompet Dhuafa Volunteer (DDV) team reporting from the location of the former Pancut Bridge, Kloposawit Village, Candipuro District.

In addition, the Dompet Dhuafa team also, together with survivors of the evacuation of objects that are still suitable for use from the location of Kajang Blank, South Kebon Deli Hamlet, Sumberwuluh Village and in Kloposawit Village, Candipuro District.

Agus Tri Budi ‘Jhon’, another East Java DDV team, reported that residents in Jobong and Kajarkosong were isolated, making mobility access in and out of the area very difficult. “The residents of Jobong and Kajarkosong, separated by the Regoyo River, are isolated,” Agus reported. The Lumajang government has set an emergency response status for 14 days, from July 7, 2023, to July 20, 2023.

There are 12 evacuation points for flood victims, namely Tumpeng Village Hall, Jarit Village Hall, Penanggal Village Hall, TAddrejo Village Hall, Besuk Village Hall, Sumberwuluh New Village Hamlet, Nurul Salam Jarit Islamic Boarding School, Salak Statue Houses, Wani Gosong Jarit Community Houses, Pronojiwo, Tempursari, and Pasrujambe Village. The total number of refugees reached 516.

Previously, high-intensity rain hit Mount Semeru’s slopes, causing river overflow to several bridges connecting villages. In addition to flooding, rain also caused landslides at some points. In an official statement published by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), as many as three residents died due to landslides that occurred in Sriti Hamlet, Sumberurip Village, Pronojiwo District, Lumajang, East Java, Friday (07/07/2023) early morning.

Head of BPBD Lumajang Regency Patria Dwi Hastiadi explained that the three victims were found lifeless after landslides buried their houses in the kitchen and bedroom. The team managed to enter and evacuate the affected victims.

“Early this morning at around 04:00, we managed to evacuate three deceased victims, one family,” Patria said in an official BNPB statement.

Patria added that high-intensity rain also caused landslides at several points. Landslides also occurred at KM 59 picket lane zero Lumajang – Malang. Visual monitoring in the field estimated the length of the landslide at about 20 meters with a height of 10. In addition, landslides also occurred on the access road to Ranupani.
