TERNATE, NORTH MALUKU — Arif Rahmadi Haryono, the head of Dompet Dhuafa’s Disaster Management Center (DMC), finalized a partnership agreement with Ternate’s Mayor, M Tauhid Soleman, to tackle waste management issues in Ternate, North Maluku. The formal agreement was signed at the Mayor’s Office on Monday (February 12, 2024).
This collaboration represents a pivotal strategy, addressing the longstanding waste problem in Ternate. A program focusing on participatory waste industrialization is included in the 14 Priority Programs set by the Ternate City Government (Pemkot) for 2024, though it had been initiated in 2021.
Mayor M Tauhid Soleman highlighted the importance of collaborative participation involving the government, community, businesses, academia, and media to address this challenge. The cooperative efforts aim to guide and strengthen waste management practices.

“This partnership is indeed strategic in tackling the waste issues of Ternate City. We’ve identified waste management as one of our 14 priority programs for 2024, building on efforts that began in 2021, particularly focusing on participatory waste industrialization,” stated the Mayor of Ternate.
“We hope that this collaboration will lead to effective guidance and enhancement of waste management efforts, ultimately reducing waste in Ternate City, God willing,” he added.
The DMC of Dompet Dhuafa has been closely monitoring the situation. They noted that population growth, economic development, and changes in lifestyle could potentially increase waste generation in Ternate.

This initiative follows the continuation of the Voluntrip Waste Summit (VWS) program from 2023, which took place in 11 provinces, including North Maluku. As a result, DMC Dompet Dhuafa has engaged various stakeholders to execute this program, including the Ternate City Government.
Both entities hope this partnership will elevate awareness among Ternate’s community members. The objective is to minimize waste in Ternate and foster a clean and healthy environment. Effective waste management is expected to enhance community capabilities and promote a circular economy benefiting a broad spectrum.
