Global Sumud Flotilla Protest in Front of US Embassy, Dompet Dhuafa: Demand the Release of Activists!

JAKARTA -— Dompet Dhuafa joined in calling for support for the solidarity action organized by the Indonesia Global Peace Convoy (IGPC) in front of the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta on Friday afternoon (October 3, 2025).

The action demanded the release of activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), an international humanitarian mission that was intercepted by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) navy in international waters. Dompet Dhuafa emphasized that the hijacking and kidnapping of participants in the humanitarian mission constituted a violation of human rights. The main demand of the crowd was for the Indonesian government to urge the United States to stop the violence in Gaza.

“And our involvement, Dompet Dhuafa, with the Global Sumud Flotilla is part of an effort to encourage and remind the world community to immediately help the people of Gaza,” said Ahmad Juwaini, Chairman of the Dompet Dhuafa Republika Foundation, in his speech.

Furthermore, Ahmad Juwaini emphasized that Dompet Dhuafa, with its commitment, continues to strive for the success of the Global Sumud Flotilla mission. It also encourages various parties, including the Indonesian government and the governments of other countries, to put pressure on Israel.

“Dompet Dhuafa is working to get parties that can help free GSF activists, including returning the detained ships, to the Indonesian government. and the governments of various countries. We are also making efforts to encourage pressure to be exerted on the Israeli government so that the detainees from the Global Sumud Flotilla can be released and ultimately the Palestinian people can be assisted humanely so that they do not starve, suffer, or get sick. That is what we are striving for,” said Ahmad Juwaini.

Hundreds of people crowded Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan carrying various protest items, from Palestinian flags to posters reading “Stop Starving Gaza” and “All Eyes on Sumud Flotilla.” The atmosphere grew even more boisterous as they chanted “Free, free Palestine!”

On Wednesday (1/10/2025) at around 8:30 p.m. Gaza time, the Global Sumud Flotilla international convoy, which was on a humanitarian mission to Gaza, was attacked by Israeli forces in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea. Three main ships, Alma, Surius, and Adara, were intercepted and boarded illegally. Before carrying out the attack, the Israeli navy first disrupted communication channels by blocking signals and stopping live broadcasts from the ships.

The Global Sumud Flotilla asserts that Israel’s attack on their convoy was an illegal act against unarmed humanitarian workers in international waters. The number of hijacked ships continues to grow, and to date more than 400 activists from over 40 ships have been arrested by Israeli authorities. The convoy consisted of humanitarian ships carrying only humanitarian aid.

Syamsul Ardiansyah, a member of the Global Peace of Convoy Presidium, stated that Israel’s seizure of the ships was an illegal violation of international law. This is because the International Court of Justice has confirmed that Israel is not allowed to prevent humanitarian aid from entering Gaza, which is currently facing genocide.

“The seizure and kidnapping of Global Sumud Flotilla activists is an extraordinary violation of human rights that we must punish together, which is why we are here in this mass action today,” said Syamsul Ardiansyah.

Today’s demonstration was also attended by a number of humanitarian organizations together with the Global Sumud Flotilla international solidarity network, including Dompet Dhuafa. In addition to demanding attention to the fate of the flotilla participants, the crowd also voiced criticism of the United States, which is considered to be giving full support to Israel’s policies on Palestine.

One of the participants, Amirah, expressed her hope that Palestine would soon gain independence and sovereignty. She also called for an end to the genocide, so that there would be no more injustice and oppression against the Palestinian people.

“So I think this is a very important moment for us to show our support for the people who are going to Palestine, to liberate Palestine and send aid,” he said.

Dompet Dhuafa emphasizes that it will continue to support and oversee humanitarian actions for Palestine until the Palestinian people can enjoy independence and live with dignity without oppression.
