JAKARTA — Some 3.4 million people are currently facing starvation in Somalia, according to Jean-Martin Bauer, Director of Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Services at the United Nations World Food Program. He reiterated that this number is expected to rise to 4.4 million in the coming months.
The drought in the Horn of Africa nation is caused by consecutive failed rainy seasons. Bauer predicted that below-average rainfall will occur again from April to June 2025.
According to Reuters, the UN World Food Programme’s aid for Somalia this year has been cut due to the unstable global economic situation.
Since 2022, drought in Somalia has claimed the lives of 43,000 people. Other problems have followed, ranging from poverty and starvation to armed conflict everywhere.
The situation has worsened as this famine has struck children. It is estimated that approximately 1.7 million children under the age of five will suffer from severe malnutrition by December 2025.

In response to the issues that have arisen over the past four decades, Dompet Dhuafa, as an active humanitarian organization, has developed strategies to contribute to helping those in need in Somalia. One of these initiatives is the distribution of sacrificial animals through the Tebar Hewan Kurban (THK) program to Somalia ahead of Eid al-Adha each year.
THK Dompet Dhuafa aims to distribute sacrificial meat to areas facing economic crises and humanitarian disasters. In previous years, Dompet Dhuafa has also regularly sent sacrificial animals to Somalia.
According to the Chairperson of THK Dompet Dhuafa 2025, Dwi Tanty Kurnianingtyas, this year’s sacrificial animals in Somalia will target internal refugees, poor families in urban and rural areas, orphans, and people with disabilities who are unable to access job opportunities and food supplies.
“We aim to distribute 200 cows this year in Somalia. The target is those affected by structural poverty, such as civilians living in refugee camps, poor families, orphans, and people with disabilities,” she said.
