MAKASSAR, SOUTH SULAWESI — In order to raise hope that her eldest son could recover, Tusyanti (39), had to travel for 2 days and 1 night from Parigi Moutong, Central Sulawesi, to Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Her eldest son, Abdul Rohim (18), who was still in aliyah school (high school level), complained of extreme pain around his knees. After being taken for treatment, the doctor said that he had bone scraping or he suffered from Ostheosarcoma disease in his knee.

Sharing with the Dompet Dhuafa team on Thursday (11/17/2022), Tusyanti said that the disease occured when the genes in the bone-forming cells underwent mutations or changes, and he had to be immediately referred to a larger and more complete hospital in Makassar.

“It was like a rapid of tests befalling our family. I haven’t dried my tears because of the loss of my newborn baby, now I am faced with the fact that my eldest son must have his leg amputated,” said Tusyanti, one of the beneficiaries of Shelter Harapan (Shelter of Hope), Dompet Dhuafa South Sulawesi.

Not willing to wait long, armed with a limited amount of money and help from school colleagues as well as the environment, Tusyanti and Rohim left for Makassar. Long story short, Rohim had to give up losing his left leg, due to his bone cancer.

“Amputation isn’t the end of all endeavors. Rohim still has to undergo chemotherapy and follow-up treatment. In the midst of that situation, we are faced with the question, how should we run treatment with a long distance of stay? Even so, we have to find an affordable rental place to live in Makassar, right?” She admitted again.

However, alhamdulillah, Tusyanti matched up with Shelter Harapan, Dompet Dhuafa South Sulawesi. Not only that, Shelter Harapan also provided an Ambulance fleet as a patient shuttle service for free. The location of Shelter Harapan is at Perdos Unhas Tamalanrea Michael Faraday Street, Blok EC / 2, Tamalanrea Jaya, Tamalanrea District, Makassar City.

“Shelter Harapan is a halfway house to help dhuafa patients and patients’ families, in an effort to get free housing during treatment at the Makassar area referral hospital. In addition to housing, patients also get free Ambulance delivery services, as well as spiritual activities,” said Syarif as the Coordinator of the Social Services and Emergency Response Program of Dompet Dhuafa South Sulawesi.

Multiple gratitude, that was how Tusyanti felt. The reason was, during the treatment, Rohim still had to use the stretcher as a means of mobility. This means that they had to use an ambulance if they wanted to take Rohim to the hospital. Definitely, it costed a lot of money. Tusyanti and Rohim had been inhabiting the Shelter Harapan for 7 (seven) months. Alhamdulillaah, now Rohim can already use a wheelchair.

“If you look at the material, you don’t know what else to do if you have to rent to live in Makassar or travel for treatment. But whatever it is, I’m still grateful, because those open paths and doors of opportunity are more valuable,” Tusyanti added.
