Night River Cruise, Stories of Empowering Preachers in the Interior of West Kalimantan

LANDAK, WEST KALIMANTAN —-— On Saturday (April 16, 2022), Ustadz Ade Nursyamsi had the opportunity to lead the tarawih prayers in congregation at the Ainul Yaqin Mosque in Panjemuran Village, Menjalin Hamlet, Pa Mayam Village, Ngabang District, Landak Regency. As a member of the Cordofa Empowerment Team (Corps Dai Dompet Dhuafa) entrusted with preaching during the month of Ramadan 1443 H in the West Kalimantan region, Ust. Ade also had the opportunity to attend the Yasin and Tahlil recitation for the late Jaini bin Bujang, who passed away a year ago.

“He was the father of our student at PBM Masjid Ainul Yaqin, Ananda Nairul. Due to financial constraints, Nairul was forced to drop out of school and now actively helps his mother as a fisherman. Alhamdulillah, after leading the tarawih prayers, we received an invitation to attend the Yasin and Tahlil recitation session as well. His journey here is extraordinary,” said Ust. Ade.

Although it is only about 500 meters away from the Ainul Yaqin Mosque (where Dai Pemberdaya lives), Ust. Ade had to travel along the Landak River to reach Ananda Nairul’s house. This is because, even though it is still on the same land, there is no road access between the two villages.

“It’s still a wilderness there, so the community and we preach using the Landak River by small boats and speed boats. When we arrive at the riverbank, the residents’ houses are not visible because it is dark and there is no electricity. The community uses solar panels, which provide limited lighting. Armed with flashlights, bismillah, we headed to the congregation’s house that night,” he admitted again.

He also revealed that most of the people there, especially those who attended the Yasin and Tahlil recitation that night, were unable to read the Qur’an. This was due to the lack of religious facilities in the remote area.

“After the recitation was over, it was closed with a meal together in the style of the rural community. Not to forget, we, the Empowering Dai, involved the students to help clean up. This was to train the students to learn to serve the community with patience, solidarity, sincerity, and totality. So that they would be steadfast without fatigue, serving without complaint. May this activity continue intensively, for example, once a week, with a regular program of reciting the Yasin from house to house so that the community becomes accustomed to the recitation of the holy verses of the Qur’an and dhikr,” concluded Ust. Ade. (Dompet Dhuafa / Ust. Ade / Dhika Prabowo)
