Prayer for Bad Dreams is an effort by Muslims to avoid frightening sleep disturbances. Bad dreams, even if they are only dreams, often leave behind meaning and feelings of fear and anxiety. In Islam, bad dreams are called ru’yâ sayyi’ah or hulm, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provided guidance so that Muslims would not panic when experiencing them. One of the recommended efforts is to recite the prayer for nightmares, as a form of self-protection to Allah.

Nightmares in Islam
In general, dreams are mental experiences that arise when the body is resting. Brain activity continues, giving rise to images, sounds, emotions, and experiences that feel real, even though they do not occur in the real world.
In Islam, dreams are divided into three categories:
- Dreams from Allah (ru’yâ shâlihah), good dreams that bring good news.
- Dreams from Satan, which are frightening nightmares.
- Dreams that originate from one’s thoughts or daily experiences.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Dreams are of three kinds: good dreams as glad tidings from Allah, dreams from Satan that are frightening, and dreams from the whispers of one’s soul” (Sahih Muslim, Book of Ar-Ru’yâ, Hadith No. 2263).
By understanding the types of dreams, friends can be calmer and use prayers for nightmares as an effort to deal with sleep disturbances. Not all dreams have a negative influence; there are dreams that serve as warnings, reflections of thoughts, or even just ordinary dreams. By knowing these differences, a person can control the anxiety that arises after a nightmare and not be carried away by excessive fear. Reciting the prayer for nightmares is a practical step to calm the heart and strengthen spiritual protection, so that sleep is comfortable again and the mind remains peaceful. This habit also teaches inner discipline and consistent faith.

Recommended Prayer for Nightmares by the Prophet
When his companions woke up from a nightmare, the Prophet recommended that they consistently recite a prayer for nightmares as spiritual protection:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ
A‘ūdzu bikalimātillāhit-tāmmati min ghadlabihi wa syarri ‘ibādihi wa min hamazātisy-syayāthīn wa an yahdhurūn.
Meaning: “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His wrath, from the evil of His servants, from the temptations of the devils, and from their presence” (HR. Abu Dawud, Tirmidzi).
In addition, other practical steps are recommended:
- Spit lightly to the left three times.
- Recite the ta’awwudh (A’ūdzu billāhi minasy-syaythānir-rajīm).
- Change your sleeping position to be more comfortable.
The Prophet Muhammad said, “If any of you sees something he dislikes, he should spit lightly to his left three times, seek refuge in Allah from the evil of what he has seen and from the evil of Satan three times, then move from his original sleeping position” (Shahih Muslim, Hadith No. 2261).
