Prepared for Extreme Weather

Extreme Weather is a natural phenomenon characterized by rainfall conditions, wind direction and speed, air temperature, air humidity, and visibility that can result in losses, especially the safety of life and property.

Extreme weather characterized by heavy rains, high wind speeds, and rising wave heights will still hit the Indonesian territory until early 2023. This was conveyed by the Head of Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) or Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Dwikorita Karnawati in an online press conference on Tuesday (27/12/2022). He said that the extreme weather warning issued by  BMKG this time was a continuation of the information that had been submitted on Wednesday (21/12/2022).

Extreme weather has recently become a hot topic of discussion, ranging from the causes of its occurrence to its consequences for everyday society. Extreme weather is often influenced by the disruption of natural water cycles which causes instability in weather conditions in Indonesia. Therefore, people are urged to improve preparedness in extreme weather.

Five preparedness steps can be taken in the face of extreme weather, there are:

  1. Monitoring the development of valid information from BMKG, BNPB regarding weather developments in various official media.
  2. Prepare a Standby Bag containing essential items such as, essential papers (diplomas, birth certificates, land certificates, etc.), clothing for 3 days, durable snacks (biscuits, etc.), money as well as drinking water.
  3. Preparing for evacuation.
  4. Maintain health by getting enough rest and a healthy diet.
  5. Securing the conditions of residence by unplugging equipment connected to electricity and putting valuables on higher ground.

Extreme weather preparedness can help to stay productive and healthy. With good self-preparation, extreme weather can certainly pass well. However, if the extreme weather outside is too severe and you want to spend time at home, ensure the house is in the most comfortable condition possible. Let’s live life better!
