JAKARTA — When Umar bin Khattab acquired land in Khaibar, he went to see the Prophet Muhammad. He said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have acquired land in Khaibar. I have never had such good fortune. So what do you command me to do?” The Prophet said, “If you like, you can hold on to the land and give the proceeds in charity, not selling it, not bequeathing it, and not inheriting it.” Then Umar donated it (the proceeds from the management of the land) to the poor, relatives, slaves, sabilillah, and guests.

Quoted from tabungwakaf.com, the management scheme for waqf donations from the community is to make the donations productive, so that they can generate a sustainable surplus. Waqf donations can be in the form of movable objects, such as money and precious metals, or immovable objects, such as land and buildings. This surplus from productive waqf is the source of endowment funds for financing the needs of the community, such as financing quality education and health services.

As explained by the General Manager of Dompet Dhuafa Waqf, Bobby Manulang, productive waqf is a form of basic waqf that can provide continuous beneficial effects. For example, when a Nadzir receives a waqf from the community, the waqf undergoes a conversion process, such as becoming an asset and providing long-term benefits for many people.

Like waqf that is converted into a hospital, which continuously provides health services for poor patients. Likewise, waqf that becomes a school, which benefits poor and orphaned students. Even the waqf of productive agricultural land, which is useful for the workers on that land, as well as the poor who receive benefits from the surplus of the waqf.

When waqf assets provide continuous benefits over a long period of time, they can be said to be productive. Dompet Dhuafa sees all waqf assets as productive, none of them are disposable,” explained Bobby, Friday (9/2/2022). (Dompet Dhuafa / Dhika Prabowo)
