Cianjur Rises Again: Al-Barokah Mosque Destroyed by Earthquake Now Stands Rebuilt

CIANJUR, WEST JAVA — A year has passed since a major earthquake shook Cianjur on Monday, November 21, 2022. The 5.6 magnitude earthquake left a traumatic imprint in the minds of Cianjur’s residents, claiming numerous lives. For the survivors, the Cianjur Earthquake remains a terrifying specter, particularly for the children.

Furthermore, the Cianjur Earthquake damaged various facilities and buildings in Cianjur, with aftershocks continuing for months afterward.

Numerous public buildings and facilities were destroyed, disrupting the daily lives of Cianjur’s residents, including places of worship like mosques. Amidst such uncertainty, mosques serve as vital places for spiritual closeness to Allah and for finding solace and acceptance of fate.

Dompet Dhuafa, a humanitarian and Islamic philanthropy organization that upholds the principle of compassion, actively participated in Cianjur’s recovery. Dompet Dhuafa launched the Cianjur Recovery Program, which included the Cianjur Rises Again Endowment Program, aimed at rebuilding mosques damaged by the earthquake. Specifically, Al-Barokah Mosque located in Kp. Ranca Picung, Cibulakan Village, Cugenang District, Cianjur Regency, West Java.

Thankfully, Al-Barokah Mosque has been completed and stands rebuilt. The people of Cianjur can now comfortably perform their prayers, having previously had to pray in temporary emergency tents. Accompanying the people of Cianjur, Dompet Dhuafa inaugurated Al-Barokah Mosque on Friday (15/12/2023).

To ensure the event ran smoothly and was filled with blessings, the inauguration of Al-Barokah Mosque began with a recitation of holy verses from the Qur’an by Ustaz H Mochsin. Following this, the residents of Cianjur, represented by survivor children, performed a musical poetry piece about the earthquake disaster a year ago that destroyed their mosque.

The inauguration of the Al-Barokah endowment mosque was marked by the symbolic cutting of tumpeng and the handover of legal documents from Dompet Dhuafa, represented by GM of Endowment Development, Ali Bastoni, to the people of Cibulakan, Cianjur, represented by the Head of Cibulakan Village, H Baden Zaki, and the Head of DKM Al-Barokah, Ustaz Arsyad Basuni.

  1. Baden Zaki Rahman, the Head of Cibulakan Village, expressed deep gratitude for the inauguration of Al-Barokah Mosque.

“On behalf of the Cibulakan Village government, we thank the donors and Dompet Dhuafa. We hope last year’s earthquake disaster will be the last. Once again, we express our gratitude,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ali Bastoni stated that from that day forward, Al-Barokah Mosque, built through the endowment mechanism, has been completed. Ali also explained that Dompet Dhuafa’s presence is merely a bridge facilitating donors or endowers to rebuild a comfortable place of worship.

“We launched the Cianjur Rises Again Endowment, and we hand it over to the people of Cibulakan Village, Cianjur, to continue, maintain, and protect it,” he said with hope.

Furthermore, Ali expressed gratitude to the Cibulakan community for their collaboration. According to him, this achievement would not have been possible without the presence of the village government, community leaders, and the people of Cianjur.

“We need to preserve this unity. We pray to continue delivering the donors’ mandates accurately and for the benefiting community to also receive goodness,” Ali hoped.

The inauguration event concluded with reflections from the people of Cibulakan, Cianjur, represented by Nina. For Nina, the earthquake that occurred a year ago remains an unforgettable memory. Initially, it was hard for Nina and the Cibulakan community to accept that their buildings, homes, and mosque were destroyed. That changed when she received a visit and information from Dompet Dhuafa, announcing that Al-Barokah Mosque would be rebuilt.

“We thank Dompet Dhuafa, the donors, and the volunteers who helped rebuild this mosque to completion. Alhamdulillah, it’s an immense joy for the people of Cibulakan, Cianjur,” Nina shared.
