DMC Volunteers and Dompet Dhuafa South Sulawesi Respond Quickly to the Mamuju Earthquake

MAMUJU, WEST SULAWESI —— An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck the Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi, on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at 12:32 p.m. local time. Occurring at a depth of 10 kilometers, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the earthquake’s epicenter as 43 kilometers southwest of Mamuju.

In response, volunteers from the Disaster Management Center (DMC) of Dompet Dhuafa, together with Dompet Dhuafa South Sulawesi, deployed an emergency response team to the earthquake-affected area. In his report, one of the DMC volunteers, Fahri, stated that he had conducted an assessment on Jl. Baharuddin Lopa, the Manakarra Stadium evacuation area, Mamuju, on Thursday (May 9, 2022) morning.

“Preliminary data assessment in the Manakarra Stadium evacuation area shows that there are 138 evacuation tents with 271 families, 1,185 people. There are also 131 toddlers and 10 pregnant women. The urgent needs at this time are drinking water, food, mats, mosquito nets, blankets, and baby diapers,” said Fahri.

“Currently, we are still conducting assessments in several affected areas. We have also coordinated with the Mamuju Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and met with the Regent of Mamuju, Hj. Sutinah, and the Deputy Regent, Mr. Ado Mas’ud, at the Evacuation Command Post. God willing, we will also set up a Warm Post at the location,” he concluded.
