Dompet Dhuafa and LKIHI FH UI Hold Public Dissemination Event to Promote Recommendations for the Fulfillment of Human Rights in Indonesia

DEPOK, WEST JAVADompet Dhuafa, in collaboration with the Institute for Islamic Studies and Islamic Law, Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia (LKIHI FH UI), held a public dissemination event on the fulfillment of human rights in Indonesia on Friday (16/9/2022).

The public dissemination was held offline at Savero Hotel, Depok. The dissemination featured several speakers who are experts in the field of human rights with participants from various community organizations. The event began with a keynote speech delivered by the GM of Advocacy at Dompet Dhuafa, Arif R. Haryono.

On this occasion, Arif said that Dompet Dhuafa’s involvement in the advocacy process related to the fulfillment of human rights in Indonesia is a form of Dompet Dhuafa’s concern for the current conditions in Indonesia. In addition, the notes presented were compiled based on Dompet Dhuafa’s humanitarian experience as a philanthropic institution and Zakat Management Unit (UPZ).

“These experiences form the basis of each point in the critical notes. In order to make these notes into a systematic document of academic and formal value, Dompet Dhuafa collaborated with LKIHI FH UI to compile recommendations for the fulfillment of human rights in Indonesia. The recommendations provided by Dompet Dhuafa focus on three areas, namely education, housing, and health,” said Arif.

After the keynote speech, there was a presentation of critical notes delivered by the research team from LKIHI FH UI led by Heru Susetyo, Ph.D. In the critical notes, each area presented issues and related policy recommendations. The issues discussed generally relate to current trends in society during the preparation of the report and the experiences of Dompet Dhuafa in advocating for the interests of the community. Meanwhile, the policy recommendations provided outline strategic steps that the government can take to address the issues previously outlined.

These critical notes were submitted to the United Nations (UN) in March. They were submitted to the UN through a special division that deals with human rights issues, namely the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), through a mechanism called the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

“The UPR is an international instrument issued by the UNHRC every five years to monitor the implementation of human rights in all countries around the world. In its development, the UPR is not only drafted by the government. Furthermore, there is a space for public participation where civil society organizations can contribute to the UPR process to raise human rights issues they wish to address. The results of the UPR, whether prepared by the government or civil society organizations, are published on the official UNHRC website,” explained Heru.
