From 1970 to 2019, drought was one of the disasters that caused the greatest loss to humans, totaling about 650,000 deaths. Among all catastrophic deaths, climate change is more than 90 per cent occurring in developing countries.

It is estimated that by 2040, as many as 160 million children will be affected by severe and prolonged drought. One in four children will live in areas with extreme water shortages. Meanwhile, in 2040, Indonesia is expected to experience a high shortage of water supplies.

Drought disasters also have a close relationship with other disasters. Long droughts can cause fires in forest and land areas, especially in peatland areas.

On the one hand, excessive groundwater utilization in urban areas also has the potential to result in drought. Since 2019, Indonesia has been included in countries with a medium to upper risk of groundwater shortage.

Drought is also a major cause of instability in the quality of agriculture and plantations. This disaster will also have an impact on people’s economic income. In conclusion, drought can impact all areas of people’s lives, both economically, socially and environmentally.

In addition, drought can result in malnutrition due to decreased availability of food and water and hygienic sanitation, as well as increased risk of infectious diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and pneumonia.

For this reason, let us participate in the Clean Water Joint Venture movement initiated by Dompet Dhuafa and Synchronize Festival 2023 because the earth is the only one, empowered now. (Dompet Dhuafa/DMC/AFP)
