SEMBAWA, SOUTH SUMATRA — On Tuesday (28/11/2023), benefit recipients of Dompet Dhuafa‘s Empowered Student Scholarship in the South Sumatra Branch took part in a unique educational activity at the cooperative farm of SMK PPN Sembawa. In this session, the scholarship recipients, together with their mentoring teachers, learned to produce and preserve green livestock fodder. They also monitored the health of the livestock on site.
This activity, centered on creating Silage from green fodder, is a training program designed to equip Empowered Student Scholarship recipients with skills related to livestock feed processing. Silage is a preservation method for green fodder, which involves storing it in an airtight container.
The process of making Silage is initiated when green fodder is plentiful, ensuring that it can be provided to livestock as needed.

In addition to learning about Silage production, the students acquired comprehensive knowledge about animal health care. As part of livestock management, the scholarship recipients actively participated in treating ill animals, always under the guidance of their mentor teachers. This included administering deworming medications and caring for wounds, thus acquainting the students with crucial aspects of maintaining livestock health.
Ahmad Rais, the program coordinator, emphasized that hands-on experience in animal care offers an invaluable learning opportunity for the students.
“This direct involvement allows them to grasp the actual conditions and challenges of livestock management, refine their practical skills, and deepen their knowledge in the domains of agriculture and animal husbandry,” he stated.
