Exploring the Essential Qualities of the Prophet That Muslims Must Emulate

Prophet Muhammad SAW, as the messenger of Allah SWT, is the epitome of a role model for all humanity. In Islam, there are four essential qualities of the Prophet that serve as guidelines for every Muslim: truthfulness (sidik), the conveyance of the message (tablig), intelligence (fathonah), and trustworthiness (amanah). Let’s delve into how Prophet Muhammad SAW exemplified these noble characteristics in his daily life and what we can learn from him.

1.     Truthfulness (Sidik)

Prophet Muhammad SAW was exceptionally honest in all matters. He never lied and always spoke with sincere honesty. A concrete example of the sidik trait is when he was given the title Al-Amin by the Meccan community due to his extraordinary honesty. The Prophet always emphasized the importance of honesty in every aspect of life. Another example is when he asserted, “Honesty leads to goodness, and goodness leads to Paradise.” (Al-Bukhari)

The Quran also mentions that a Muslim must act truthfully. “O you who have believed, fear Allah and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow – and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.” (QS. Al-Hashr: 18)

2.     Conveyance of the Message (Tablig)

Prophet Muhammad SAW was sent by Allah to spread the teachings of Islam to all humanity. With perseverance and sincerity, he delivered Allah’s message to everyone, indiscriminately. A real-life example of the tablig trait is when he faced various obstacles and challenges in spreading the message of Islam but never gave up and continued to fight with great enthusiasm.

This verse also reminds us to act tablig as Prophet Muhammad SAW did: “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.” (QS. An-Nahl: 125)

3.     Intelligence (Fathonah)

Prophet Muhammad SAW was also blessed with extraordinary intelligence. He was able to make wise and appropriate decisions in various situations. One example of the application of the fathonah trait is when he formulated the Treaty of Hudaibiyah, which strengthened the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims in Mecca. He showed that intelligence is not only about intellectual capacity but also about wisdom in facing every situation.

This is because Prophet Muhammad adhered to the following verse: “So rely upon Allah; indeed, you are upon the clear truth.” (QS. Al-Mulk: 13)

4.     Trustworthiness (Amanah)

Prophet Muhammad SAW was a figure who was highly trusted by everyone around him. He always kept promises, maintained trust, and never disappointed others’ expectations. A concrete example of the amanah trait is when he was trusted by Khadijah RA to manage her wealth and business ventures with full trust. As conveyed in the verse, “And do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].” (QS. Al-Anfal: 27)
