JAKARTA – On Wednesday (25/1/2022), Dompet Dhuafa met up with the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) at the Komnas HAM office, Menteng, Central Jakarta. This meeting discussed the situation of cases of Atypical Progressive Acute Kidney Injury or Gagal Ginjal Akut Progresif Atipikal (GGAPA) in children who had claimed hundreds of lives since Oktober 2022.

Based on the monitoring of the Indonesian Civil Society Coalition (CSO) and Komnas HAM, currently the condition of the survivors has not fully recovered. There are still at least 25 victims and families of victims in the Jabodetabek area who are experiencing various problems.

These problems include psychic trauma experienced by remaining family members and impaired functioning of other organs such as physical (blind/deaf) and mental (nerve/brain) disabilities for surviving victims. Meanwhile, the victims who are still hospitalized are also not all their medical devices and medicines covered by BPJS Kesehatan.

On the other hand, there is also an economic impact felt by the family, which is when the fathers of the victims have to leave their jobs to accompany their children who have not recovered yet.

To solve issues related to GGAPA, Komnas HAM has written to the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (Menko PMK), the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos), the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), and also the Badan Amil Zakat Nasional (Baznas).

However, until now, it has only been with Dompet Dhuafa that Komnas HAM can coordinate further regarding the handling of the problem. In a meeting at the Komnas HAM office, Dompet Dhuafa said that it would do all it could to help the social recovery and health of GGAPA children victims.

In addition, the Indonesian Civil Society Coalition (CSO) is also involved in encouraging the achievement of justice for victims, so that they get recovery and accountability from the authorities.

What is GGAPA?

Gagal Ginjal Akut Progresif Atipikal (GGAPA) or Atypical Progressive Acute Kidney Injury is a condition when the kidneys stop working suddenly or in a sudden and cannot function normally. If this condition occurs, the kidneys can no longer remove the body’s metabolic waste and are unable to balance water and electrolytes.

Generally, this condition occurs due to complications from other serious diseases and is usually suffered by parents or intensive care patients in the hospital. If not treated immediately, acute kidney injury can be life-threatening.

GGAPA itself is caused by many things, including a decrease in blood flow, direct damage to the kidneys, blockage of the urinary tract, reactions to side effects of drugs, the use of hypertension drugs and so on.
