JOMBANG, EAST JAVA — In Islamic history, many waqf assets have been developed and continuously maintained to become productive assets that benefit many people. These assets are not only in the form of mosques or tombs as widely known by the people of Indonesia, but some are in the form of hospitals, schools, hotels, cultural buildings, educational dormitories, and so on.
So, many things can be built and developed with waqf funds. The asset must be managed properly and professionally and not released or resold because it is recorded as the people’s property.
“When endowments have become part of civilization, God willing, it will become an eternal economic instrument for society. Because the acquisition is carried out in cooperation, the distribution is carried out in cooperation. From the community and for the community,” said Bobby Manulang, GM of Waqf Dompet Dhuafa.

Like Dompet Dhuafa, who also collaborated with the big family of KH Hasyim Asy’ari Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School to establish Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital in Jombang, East Java. The initiation of the construction of this hospital began with the first visit (the late) Salahuddin Wahid to the Integrated Hospital (RST) Madina Zone Area of Dompet Dhuafa in Bogor on April 20, 2017.
Gus Sholah Visits Dompet Dhuafa’s Integrated Hospital
During his visit, Kyai, commonly called Gus Sholah, visited the hospital, often interacting with its beneficiaries. Seeing the medical team’s warm smile and helpful spirit, Gus Sholah decided to cooperate with Dompet Dhuafa to build a waqf-based hospital.
Dompet Dhuafa’s interaction with Gus Sholah is already the umpteenth time until finally, Gus Sholah collaborated with Dompet Dhuafa to adopt the concept of a waqf-based hospital in the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School Area, Jombang. A few months after his visit, the extended family of KH Hashim Asy’ari decided to entrust a piece of land of one hectare.

Alhamdulillah, one year later, the good action collaboration was realized. The symbolic laying of the first stone of the construction of Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital was held on September 19, 2018. This hospital will have a capacity of 100 beds. In addition, other services opened are general services with superior hemodialysis services.
In initiating the waqf-based dhuafa hospital, Gus Sholah advised that the hospital’s management from Dompet Dhuafa is an example of how to apply Islam in life because it is truly Islamic, which is to lift and empower the sick to complete health.
“RST is one of the implementations of Islam that blesses all around the world (rahmatan lil alamin) in life and the realization of the ideals of Pancasila, namely realizing social justice. What Dompet Dhuafa does is an example and must be transmitted,” said Gus Sholah at that time.
Visit of Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia KH Ma’ruf Amin to Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital
Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. DR. (HC.) K.H. Ma’ruf Amin, during a working visit to the East Java region, took the time to attend the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School. Vice President Ma’ruf Amin also stopped at Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital Tebuireng on June 4, 2022.
The visit was guided by Muhammad Zakaria, Director of PT DD Medika, KH Abdul Ghofar as Secretary of Ponpes Tebuireng, H Iqbal Billy Wahid as Director of Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin accompanied by East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Prawansa, reviewed several facilities and rooms at Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital and Departed from the hospital lobby, the review continues to the operating room, treatment room to the ICU room. By taking a hospital tour, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin can see firsthand the condition and readiness of Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital to serve community treatment.
Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia KH Ma’ruf Amin appreciated the presence of Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital in Tebuireng Jombang. As an alumnus of Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School, he expressed his admiration for the development of the school in the current era because Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School is now much more advanced with various existing facilities.

When I was a child, I was at Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School. I see, nowadays, Islamic Boarding Schools have developed in such a way. Not only are religious schools developing economic activities, but also there are now hospitals. I hope this development continues,” said Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, on the sidelines of his visit to Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital.
Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital is a waqf hospital that uses the concepts of physical health, mental health, social health, and spiritual health. Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital strives to optimize the good values of KH Hasyim Asy’ari to benefit poor people who need trustworthy and professional health services.
Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital Stands and Ready to Serve Patients
Thanks to Allah (Alhamdulillah), since February 2, 2023, Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital has officially operated and is ready to serve patients. The solemn joint prayer became the official sign of the service of Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital and coincided with the three years after his death (the late Gus Sholah).

He expressed his gratitude. He explained that Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital is a new hospital that did not grow from a clinic but was directly built into a type C hospital.
“Maybe Dompet Dhuafa has built a hospital. But for Tebuireng, this is the first. And in South Jombang, there is no hospital of this type,” he said.
Gus Ghoffar also reminded us that Hasyim Asy’ari Hospital is the ideal of Salahuddin Wahid and Parni Hadi. He hopes that it will bring many benefits.
“This hospital has had a long journey, from laying the first stone to the building as it is today. However, all challenges can be faced with enthusiasm and efforts to create a waqf-based hospital. “Hopefully what our collaboration together can do will be strong, so that what we hope for can come true,” explained Gus Ghoffar on his occasion.
