ayat-al-quran-tentang-zakat

Starting a mutual fund investment nowadays is no longer difficult. In just a matter of hours or even minutes, you can purchase mutual funds through your smartphone. However, did you know that mutual funds are also subject to zakat? What are the requirements and how to calculate mutual fund zakat? Here’s the full explanation.

Definition of Mutual Fund

Mutual Funds are containers used to collect funds from the capital owners (investors) which are managed by legal entities called Investment Managers. The Investment Manager then manages funds from investors and invests them in securities such as stocks, bonds, and money market instruments.

Referring to Capital Market Law No. 8 of 1995, Article 1 Paragraph (27), there are four things related to the definition of mutual funds. First, mutual funds are a collection of funds from the owners (investors). Second, mutual funds are invested in securities known as investment instruments. Third, mutual funds are managed by investment managers. Fourth, mutual funds are medium and long-term instruments.

Mutual Fund Zakat Obligatory

Launching the website of the National Amil Zakat Agency (Baznas), the results of investment profits, including mutual fund investments, must be issued zakat. This was agreed by the scholars at the First International Congress on Zakat in Kuwait on 29 Rajab 1404 H or May 1, 1984 AD.

On the other hand, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has also emphasized that zakat on investment instruments must be issued. People who have other income to make ends meet and have a special allocation in investment instruments, are obliged to pay zakat by fulfilling the rules of nisab and haul. Thus, it can be concluded that mutual funds or other investment instruments are zakat objects.

Mutual Fund Zakat Provisions

Mutual fund zakat must be paid if the investment profit has reached the nisab. The nisab of mutual fund zakat is the same as the nisab of zakat mal, which is worth 85 grams of gold with a zakat rate of 2.5 percent and has reached one year or haul. Thus, if the value of your mutual fund investment has reached 85 grams of gold or Rp129 million (as of December 16, 2024) in a year, then you are obliged to pay mutual fund zakat of 2.5 percent of the value of your mutual fund.

How to Calculate Mutual Fund Zakat

From the above provisions, we can already know how to calculate mutual fund zakat, where the calculation is based on the calculation of zakat mal. Here is an example of calculating mutual fund zakat:

If the value of one gram of pure gold is Rp1,517,000 as of December 16, 2024, then the total assets of your zakat-obligated mutual funds must have reached Rp128,945,000 within a year. The amount is obtained from calculating the value of one gram of gold Rp1,517,000 multiplied by 85 grams of gold.

For example, if you have mutual fund assets worth IDR203 million for a year, then the value of your mutual fund is subject to mandatory zakat. Thus, you are obliged to pay mutual fund zakat as much as 2.5 percent of total assets, which is Rp5,075,000. However, if the value of your mutual fund assets has not reached IDR 128,945,000, then you are not obliged to pay zakat.
