New School Year, Dompet Dhuafa and Tokio Marine Life Care Invite Manggarai Fire Survivors to Shop for School Supplies

JAKARTA -— Held at Gramedia Matraman on Thursday (10/7/2025), Dompet Dhuafa together with Tokio Marine Life Insurance Indonesia (Tokio Marine Life Peduli) held a “Literacy Party & School Kit Shopping” event in conjunction with Back to School to welcome National Children’s Day on July 23, 2025.

Through this collaboration, Tokio Marine Life Peduli distributed its zakat and infak contributions through Dompet Dhuafa to five regions: Jakarta, Bali, Batam, Surabaya, and Medan. In Jakarta specifically, the assistance was distributed through educational activities, including literacy programs and school supply shopping with the beneficiaries.

A total of 50 beneficiaries, who are children and survivors of a fire that occurred in Manggarai some time ago, received the assistance. They are part of the Manggarai Reading Garden Community under the Indonesian Literacy School program, a pillar of Dompet Dhuafa’s education initiative.

Yudha Andila, Retail Manager at Dompet Dhuafa, emphasized the importance of literacy in encouraging children to be more active in improving their learning abilities through reading.

“Literacy is about the ability and desire to learn. With this event, hopefully these children will enjoy reading and be able to understand what they read,” said Yudha.

This spirit is what we want to share through the Literacy Festival, as a small step towards building better learning habits. Tokio Marine Life Peduli’s commitment continues to prioritize human values. This shows that success is not only measured by business achievements, but also by how much contribution is made to the lives of others.

Education is viewed as a fundamental right for every child—the right to learn and to grow. Providing one child with the opportunity to learn means opening the door for an entire generation to break free from limitations.

“So, as a foundation of literacy, how minimal literacy is in Indonesia, and how important it is for these children to be equipped with education so that they can thrive because they are the future generation of the nation,” said Fera, a representative of Tokio Marine Life Peduli.

Like Rangga, who found a glimmer of hope through the collaboration between Dompet Dhuafa and Tokio Marine Life Peduli. Rangga is one of the beneficiaries currently attending third grade at an elementary school. He is one of the survivors of the Manggarai fire who bravely shared his story about the tragic incident that befell him and his family.

When the fire broke out that day, it was a normal night for Rangga, who lived with his mother, sister, uncle, and grandmother in their home. But everything changed in an instant when an explosion from a cell phone that was charging woke his family from their sleep. The fire did not originate in their home, but the flames quickly engulfed it.

“My house was once destroyed by a fire. It was late at night, and I was sleeping when my grandmother woke me up. The house was completely engulfed in flames, leaving nothing behind,” Rangga recounted, his voice trembling.

Since then, Rangga and his family have been living in a flat, trying to rebuild their lives from the ruins. His father passed away when Rangga was eight years old, and now he can only pray for him every time he prays.

“I was scared and sad because it was my first time experiencing a fire, and now I have to live in a flat,” Rangga continued.

However, amidst the pain and loss, Rangga received a school kit containing a bag, books, colored pencils, and socks for the first time. “I’m so happy to get a bag. Thank you for giving me a new bag and school supplies for the first time. This is also my first time being invited here (Gramedia). Thank you, Tokio Marine, for giving me a bag. I’m very happy and hope you stay healthy,” said Rangga.

Through this activity, it is hoped that children will be more motivated to spend their free time on positive activities rather than playing with gadgets, which can broaden their horizons and open new windows of knowledge. The provision of school kits is not merely material assistance, but also a source of encouragement and hope that they will study harder and continue to pursue knowledge to higher levels.
