YOGYAKARTA — Dompet Dhuafa continues its commitment to providing healthcare services to underprivileged patients. Several aspects of patient treatment are not fully covered by BPJS or KIS, such as transportation from home to the hospital. Moreover, if the patient receives a referral to a hospital far outside their local area or even to another island, their families require a transit home to stay while accompanying the patient for treatment.

Therefore, Dompet Dhuafa has introduced a healthcare facility, the Shelter Sehati Transit Home. One such facility is located at Nogosaren Kidul No. 198 B, Nogotirto, Gamping District, Sleman Regency, DI Yogyakarta.

This patient transit home began operations on December 6, 2023. A month later, Shelter Sehati Dompet Dhuafa Yogyakarta had already served 9 patients who had stayed there. As of Saturday (20/1/2024), when the transit home was covered, one patient and their family were still residing.

At this patient transit home, Dompet Dhuafa does not charge any fees to the patients and companions staying. They are allowed to stay as long as they need. There are 10 rooms/beds available, consisting of 5 standard rooms, 4 rooms for child patients, and 1 special room. The patient transit home also has a communal kitchen, bathroom, drying area, and facilities for other household needs. Additionally, the transit home has two ambulance units (for patients and for the deceased/Barzah) for patient transportation.

According to Selamet Widodo, one of the ambulance drivers residing there, the majority of those staying at Shelter Sehati are patients undergoing treatment at major referral hospitals in Yogyakarta, such as RS Akademik UGM, RSUP Dr. Sardjito, and RS Pantirapih Yogyakarta.

“The facilities provided to the patients or benefit recipients of the transit home include accommodation, daily meals, and transportation to the hospital. All for free. We strive to provide the best service possible,” Widodo emphasized.

Besides Widodo, three other people live in the transit home, always on standby for any patient or citizen in need.

The patient still staying at the transit home was a middle-aged woman from Banjarnegara, Central Java. She was undergoing treatment for cervical cancer, diagnosed a year earlier. During her stay at the patient transit home, she was accompanied by her son.

According to her son, they arrived at the patient transit home at the end of December 2023, two weeks after Shelter Sehati began operating.

“Usually, when it’s time for treatment, we stay at a patient transit home near RS Sardjito. It happened to be full this time. We looked for an alternative from the ambulance driver at that transit home and were directed to Dompet Dhuafa. It’s cool and comfortable here. My mother also feels comfortable here,” the son explained on Saturday (20/1/2024).

He also shared that initially, his mother was referred to RSUD Banjarnegara, then referred again to RSUD Margono in Purwokerto. There was a resident doctor there who also works at RS Sardjito. After that, she was referred and observed at RS Sardjito, continuing her treatment there.

The gratitude expressed by patients motivates Dompet Dhuafa to continue improving its services. How can Dompet Dhuafa offer services for free to the underprivileged? This is made possible through the management of zakat, infaq, and charity funds entrusted by donors through Dompet Dhuafa. This kindness is realized thanks to the trust from all segments of society, especially the donors and benefit recipients. (Dompet Dhuafa/Muthohar)
