Refugees Worship Comfortably and Safely in Temporary Mosques

CIANJUR, WEST JAVA — The Dompet Dhuafa Response Team established a Temporary Prayer Place located in the courtyard of the Jami Nurul Hidayah Mosque, Grogol Kidul Village, Cibulakan Village, Cugenang District, on Sunday (27/11/2022). Residents there also admitted that they felt comfortable and safe in the presence of the mushola.

“After the earthquake, every prayer in front of the mosque always worries about feeling shaky. Alhamdulillah, now there is this mushola, so it is more comfortable. If maghrib prayers can be up to 3 (three) clusters,” said Mr Elan (53), a resident of Kp. Garogol Kidul, on Thursday (5/1/2023).

Worship facilities are one of the places needed by Cianjur earthquake survivors. The earthquake damaged more than 144 places of worship on Monday, November 27, 2022. In addition to logistical assistance, the devotees also need psychic and spiritual help through prayer.

The temporary mushola is made of wood and stage models. This building is a means of worship for hundreds of refugees in RW 04 and Rw 05 Kp. Grogol Kidul. With this mushola’s presence, refugees can continue to pray safely and comfortably.

The condition of the Jami Nurul Hidayah Mosque is very concerning. The collapsed ceiling roof to the support posts cracked and tilted. This mosque was just renovated in June 2022, from the donations of residents and donors.

“Before there was this prayer place, it was usually prayed in tents, but it was not solemn; many people passed by and if it rained it was muddy,” said Mr Elan, an earthquake survivor whose house was destroyed right in front of the mosque.

In addition to the Jami Nurul Hidayah Mosque, dozens of other mosques/musholas have collapsed and need help to rebuild.
