Check out the following review.

Law on the Implementation of Sacrificial Animal Slaughter

Sacrifice in Arabic is called ‘udhiyah’, meaning slaughtering animals in the morning. According to the term, sacrifice (qurban) is one way of worshipping Allah Almighty by slaughtering certain animals during Eid al-Adha and Tasyrik Day (the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah).

The law of carrying out the slaughter of sacrificial animals during Eid al-Adha is sunnah muakkad, which is highly recommended, especially for people with the ability. Abu Hurairah said the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Whoever has the ability for doing sacrifice but he does not do that so, do not let him not approach our place of prayer.” (HR. Imam Ahmad).

Requirements for Slaughtering Sacrificial Animals

Slaughtering sacrificial animals cannot be done carelessly. Some conditions must be met so the Islamic rules (Shari’a) can carry out sacrificial worship. The following are the conditions for slaughtering sacrificial animals.

1. Slaughter Requirements

The slaughterer must be a Muslim or a non-Muslim who is halal to marry. In the historical context of the Prophet (peace be upon him), non-Muslims who are lawful to marry still embrace the divine religion (Jews and Christians) purely, worshiping Allah as the One God.

The people in charge of slaughtering should know slaughter techniques without hurting animals—those with strong enough physical abilities and good emotional control abilities.

And to be remembered, during the slaughter process, the officer should say the words of Allah as a form of animal sacrifice in the name of Allah Almighty.

2. Terms of Slaughtered Animals

The slaughtered animals must be alive (mustaqirrah), still have a spirit in its body, or an animal that is lawful to consume and lead an everyday life such as seeing, moving, sounding, and moving freely. Healthy animals that are not in a state of torture. Must be physically healthy, not disabled, legs can walk or not limp, body is average and not too thin, ears are not broken, tail is intact, and age is sufficient to be sacrificed.

If the livestock experiences death, such as eating poisonous plants, being injured by wild animals, or being crushed by buildings, then the animal is not legal to slaughter and is not halal to consume. Animals that fall into the category of sacrificial animals are camels, cows, buffaloes, goats, and sheep.

Procedures for Slaughtering Sacrificial Animals

The process of slaughtering a sacrificial animal begins with the following:

  2.   Saying respect for the prayer of the Prophet (Shalawat)
  3.   The slaughtered animal and the slaughtering person face the Qibla
  4.   Reading a prayer of Allah’s magnification (Takbir) 3 times together

Time of Sacrifice

The time of slaughter of sacrificial animals is not only during Eid al-Adha, which is the 10th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah but also up to three days after. Namely the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, commonly called the Day of Tasyrik. In Arabic, Tasyrik comes from the word Syark which means east. Tasyrik means to dry in the sun.

Imam An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) explained, “The Day of Tasyrik is three days after Eid al-Adha (i.e., 11th, 12th, 13th Dhū al-Ḥijjah). It is called Tasyrik because Tasyrik means to kick or dry sacrificial meat in the hot sun. In the hadith mentioned, the Day of Tasyrik is a day to multiply dhikr; takbir and others.” (Sharh Shahih Muslim, 8:18)

From Anas bin Malik, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever slaughters (sacrificial animals) before the Eid prayer, then he slaughters for himself, and whoever slaughters after the Eid prayer, then his sacrificial service is complete and acts following the Sunnah of the Muslims.” (H.R.Bukhari).

It is narrated from the path of Nafi’ bin Jubair bin Muth’im that Bisyr bin Suhaim said, On the tasyrik days of the Prophet PBUH. Once preached, he said, “There will be no heaven except a clean soul, and these are the days of eating and drinking.”

It is from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) told Abdullah ibn Hudzafah to go around Mina making the following appeal, “Do not fast on these days, for indeed these days are days to eat and drink and dhikr to Allah.” (HR Muslim)
