Building a Protein Bank, Dompet Dhuafa Helps Strengthen Food Security After the Cianjur Earthquake

CIANJUR, WEST JAVA -After the Cianjur Earthquake, Dompet Dhuafa West Java together with the Disaster Management Center (DMC) helped strengthen food security through the construction of a Protein Bank on Tuesday (03/01/2023). This program intensifies fish farming in Kampung Pameungpeuk, Cijedil Village, Cugenang District, Cianjur Regency.

A total of 40 kilograms of fresh tilapia was farmed to help restore the economy of Cianjur earthquake survivors after the disaster occurred. The concept of this program is to buy fish from the ponds of survivors affected by disasters, in order to help food security in refugee camps.

Through this program, beneficiaries can pick up fish in ponds to help with food availability at the refugee camps.

The building of the Protein Bank aims to help the economic sector of the survivors. The trick is to buy fish from the ponds of the affected residents, and then the fish is provided free of charge to the refugees. It is hoped that through this program, the health of the refugees can be maintained because of the availability of good nutrition and good protein intake.

“Some of the objectives of this program are to help move the wheels of the Cianjur society’s economy by buying fish from the surrounding affected society. Secondly, providing good nutrition guarantees for the families of survivors who are in the refugee camps,” said Andriansyah, Head of Dompet Dhuafa West Java Branch.

In addition, the tilapia farming is expected to be an alternative solution to ease the boredom of refugees while regenerating the courage of sharing among survivors.

“Thirdly, farming fish is expected to be an alternative positive activity that can ease the feeling of boredom for survivors who are currently entering their sixth week of being in the refugee camps. Fourthly, if the results of maintenance and farming are good, this can restore the courage of sharing between fellow survivors. In addition, in the future this program is also expected to be an alternative to improve the economy for survivors,” Andriansyah continued.

One of the volunteers of Dompet Dhuafa West Java, Rian shared his testimony on the benefits provided by the Protein Bank program. Rian, who is currently serving as a volunteer for DMC Dompet Dhuafa, said that the Protein Bank was very helpful for residents in food security and could be a place for entertainment for children in the refugee camps.

“The goal is for the food security of the residents after the disaster, and besides that with the Protein Bank, the children at the refugee camps are very happy because there is a place to play around, even if they just look at the fish in the Protein Bank,” said Rian.

It is known that tilapia is a freshwater fish that is commonly consumed in Indonesia. In addition to the delicious taste of the meat and the complete nutritional content, tilapia also has several health benefits for the body.

The Tilapia fish is rich in essential omega-6 fatty acids and also vitamins D, B12, and B6. This is very important for the health of the nerve’s system and function. Eating tilapia can also help the body’s metabolism to become more immune to various disease challenges.

“Alhamdulillah, I am very happy because the protein intake from fish for residents in refugee camps can be fulfilled, thanks to this Protein Bank,” explained one of the beneficiaries.

Until now, Dompet Dhuafa through Dompet Dhuafa West Java, Disaster Management Center (DMC), and various other units and organs continue to provide recovery services in areas affected by the Cianjur Earthquake. On that basis, Dompet Dhuafa through DMC Dompet Dhuafa invites the society to participate in disaster management that is being carried out in the Cianjur area.
