SUKABUMI, WEST JAVA—- On Thursday (November 6, 2025), residents of Parung Joho Village, Bantar Panjang Village, were relieved to have their clean water needs met after the renovation of a borehole well was completed and it became operational again. Previously, for months they had relied on an unpredictable and often polluted river. However, now the community can enjoy access to cleaner and safer water.
Susi Anggraeni (22), a local resident, recounted how flash floods that hit their area some time ago cut off access and destroyed several facilities. The bridge that residents used to reach their farmland was washed away by the current. The river, which had been the main source of water for their daily needs, was no longer safe to use.

“That’s because there was a flash flood, houses collapsed, houses were flooded, schools were destroyed, even school equipment was lost, everything was gone. The schools were gone, they were all destroyed. The wells were also affected, so there was no clean water at that time. So we were forced to return to the water here (the river),” said Susi.
Before the borehole wells were available, residents relied on the river for bathing, washing, and drinking water. During the dry season, the situation was no less difficult. The river dried up, forcing residents to search for leuwi—remaining pools of water—just to wash. The once-clear river water was no longer safe to drink, often contaminated with animal waste and industrial waste.

When flash floods hit, the drilled wells, which were the main source of clean water, were damaged. The submersible machines died because the electrical cables were cut by the current. The residents once again had to rely on the river, which was increasingly unsuitable during the rainy season. This event left a lasting scar on the community.
Even the river water that appears clean is actually unfit for consumption. Susi mentioned that sometimes there is livestock waste, and even industrial waste flowing along with the river current.
“The thing is, we couldn’t find water before the well was built, and if we don’t take water from the river, we can’t get clean water anywhere else except here,” Susi added.

Hope emerged when Prudential Syariah and Dompet Dhuafa launched a program to renovate bore wells and distribute food packages to flash flood survivors. The distribution took place at a mosque in Kampung Parung Joho, Bantar Panjang Village, Sukabumi, on Thursday (November 6, 2025).
Ayu Septiana, CSR Partnership Officer at Dompet Dhuafa, revealed that this distribution was specifically given to survivors affected by the Sukabumi flash floods. She also hoped that this could serve as motivation and a form of support from Prudential Syariah and Dompet Dhuafa to the residents.

“We hope that the renovation of this clean water well will help facilitate the activities of the community in Kampung Parung Joho, Bantar Panjang Village, Sukabumi. We also hope that the community will take care of this small legacy from Prudential Syariah, so that it can last for a long time for their children and grandchildren,” said Ayu.
Parung Joho Village is relatively isolated and can only be reached by vehicles capable of traversing forest terrain. To reach this area, the team had to travel a long way along rocky, slippery, and damaged roads before finally arriving at a remote area along the Cikaso River, where Parung Joho Village is located.

Furthermore, according to Resda Jaya Pangestu, Humanitarian and Health Program Staff at Dompet Dhuafa West Java, the renovation process is not easy. The damage occurred because there was no electricity and the cables that were previously used were damaged by the flood. As a result, the submersible machine at a depth of 60 meters cannot function.
“This is one of the areas affected by the flood, it was very severe along the Cikaso River, and this is an area that is indeed remote and can be called isolated because to reach this location, you have to pass through hills, rice fields, and gardens via roads that are in poor condition and require vehicles that are designed for forest terrain, so it is indeed quite difficult, but thank God, because our intention is to do good, we were able to overcome these obstacles. We were motivated to help with the renovation in terms of equipment and labor because we had to lay cables spanning 500 meters,” said Resda.

However, thanks to the hard work of the team and the residents, the borehole was successfully reinstalled and is now flowing with clean water again. For residents like Susi, the return of the borehole has made a big difference to their daily routine.
“Since the well was renovated, thank God we no longer have to go back and forth to wash dishes, clothes, and bathe the children. Since the well was renovated, thank God. Alhamdulillah, clean water is now available in residents’ homes. It has made our lives easier and more comfortable, especially for mothers who want to do laundry. We feel safer and more at ease because we can do laundry while taking care of our children. Household chores are now easier to complete. We can do laundry anytime, whether it’s at night, in the afternoon, or in the morning. Thank you, Prudential Syariah and Dompet Dhuafa,” said Susi.
