Great Energy and Long Recovery, Dompet Dhuafa at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Forum: A Combination of Emergency Response Efforts is Needed After the Sumatra Disaster

JAKARTA —–— Discussing the acceleration of socio-economic recovery after the Sumatra disaster—flash floods and landslides that occurred in December 2025—in a coordination meeting held by the Coordinating Ministry for Community Empowerment on Tuesday (January 6, 2025), Dompet Dhuafa stated that the disaster response would require a great deal of energy.

“Emergency response and transition to recovery efforts are expected to take at least 6-12 months,” said Syamsul Ardiansyah, Head of Strategic Alliances at Dompet Dhuafa, during the meeting led by Deputy for Social Welfare Improvement, Prof. Dr. Ir. Nunung Nuryantono, M.Si.

“Meanwhile, the process of full recovery, including the construction of vital infrastructure based on the build-back-better principle, will take at least five years,” he added.

According to Dompet Dhuafa, the disaster in Sumatra did not occur at the peak of the rainy season, which means that high rainfall will continue for the next four months.

“Therefore, in the midst of the transition to recovery, as is currently happening, follow-up dangers that could pose a threat to safety will still occur,” he explained further.

Responding to these needs, Dompet Dhuafa combines disaster emergency response efforts, such as providing access to safe housing and shelter, meeting basic living needs, and restoring basic services in the fields of health and education, with economic recovery, livelihoods, and business opportunities, which are usually carried out in the recovery phase.

Based on data from the Situation Report (Sitrep) of the Dompet Dhuafa Disaster Management Center (DMC) published on January 5, 2025, there were: 1,177 deaths, 148 missing persons, and 242,200 displaced persons (Source: BNPB).

It is also reported that the urgent needs at this time are evacuation, ready-to-eat food, clean water, sanitation, logistics (non-food), medical services, wifi & chargers, shelter, baby supplies, women’s supplies, and elderly supplies.

Since deploying its humanitarian team at the beginning and up to now, Dompet Dhuafa has been working to accelerate the evacuation of victims, distributing logistical aid (food and non-food), school kits, hygiene kits, family kits, Muslim kits, Wi-Fi & charger stations, water & clean-up operations), public kitchens, warm shelters, medical services, PFA (Psychological First Aid) services, motorcycle services, haircuts, cheerful schools, tactical vehicles & ambulances, to Rumtara (temporary shelters), and has deployed 257 personnel.
