HFI Partners with DMC Dompet Dhuafa to Strengthen Resilience Based on Local Wisdom

BADUNG, BALI —— As a member of the Humanitarian Forum Indonesia (HFI), Dompet Dhuafa’s Disaster Management Center (DMC) supports HFI’s commitment to improving community resilience in responding to natural disasters, as stated on Monday (05/30/2022).

Through The 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR), the HFI family, together with other members of the Civil Society Coalition for GPDRR, urged efforts to strengthen sustainable, community-centered resilience that accommodates the interests of at-risk groups.

This was conveyed by the Civil Society Coalition for GPDRR at a press conference at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on Friday (May 27, 2022). GPDRR, as an international event of GP2022, will review the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030, recommend priority actions for policymakers, highlight good practices, and raise awareness.

This will not stop at the GPDRR event, but will continue in other advocacy forums to be held this year, including but not limited to Disaster Risk Reduction Month, the National Conference on Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction, the G20 Summit, COP 27, and the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction; and most importantly, concrete follow-up in the community.

“The involvement of civil society, including religious institutions and religious leaders, in disaster risk reduction is absolutely essential, because they are the first to be affected and the most impacted. However, they are also the front line in dealing with the impact of disasters,” said M. Ali Yusuf, Chairman of the HFI Executive Board.

“Their aspirations must be heard, responded to, and absorbed to form the basis for policy formulation, so that initiatives can be created to build partnerships and collaboration in strengthening the nation’s resilience in facing disasters,” he continued.

DMC Dompet Dhuafa, in terms of resilience, has a Disaster Response Area program. DMC establishes local community disaster risk reduction (DRR) forums, maps disaster-prone areas, creates seasonal calendars, and develops follow-up plans (RTL) for long-term contingency and mitigation.

Then, in the Climate Change Adaptation program, DMC conducts campaigns on environmental awareness to all levels of society. This is so that the perspective of caring for the environment can be adapted by all communities, from children to adults. In addition, DMC also develops disaster mitigation-based ecotourism by optimizing the local wisdom of the local community.

Finally, in the Disaster Mitigation Education program, DMC conducts soft skills and hard skills training on disasters for the wider community. Starting from vertical rescue, water rescue, and jungle rescue. In addition, DMC also provides training in emergency response such as disaster volunteer post management, public kitchen setup, and medical first aid training.

“As part of Dompet Dhuafa, we always involve the local community in promoting our programs at DMC. This is to ensure that the beneficiaries are the right people to receive our program assistance. Donors also remind us to involve community elements from the neighborhood level up to the provincial level. This way, the collaboration will be more extensive and beneficial,” explained Haryo Mojopahit, Chief Executive of DMC Dompet Dhuafa. (Dompet Dhuafa / DMC)
