Mosque Destroyed, Survivors Dream of Proper Worship After Cianjur Earthquake

ACTNews, CIANJUR, WEST JAVA — As Dzuhur time approached, the survivors in the evacuation site in Garogol Kidul Hamlet RT 02/RW 05 Cibulakan Village, Cugenang Sub-District, hurried to pray in Jami Nurul Hidayah Mosque. However, the mosque was still in ruins after the earthquake that hit Cianjur on Monday, November 21, 2022.

Apart from being dirty, the cracked building and ceiling with large holes are still worrying if it collapses again. Only a few people are still ‘desperate’ to pray there. One of them is Mr. Udin Samsudin (70). He waited for his turn to perform ablution while watching Dompet Dhuafa volunteers build a makeshift mosque on the terrace of Jami Nurul Hidayah Mosque, Tuesday (11/29/2022).

“I’m worried, but I still have to pray. Hopefully this Emergency Mosque will be completed quickly, so that worship is more feasible and calm,” he said.

Yes, there, Dompet Dhuafa mobilized volunteers to roll out assistance to build an Emergency Mosque since Saturday, November 27, 2022), then. With a planned size of 10 x 5 square meters, the Emergency Mosque is expected to accommodate around 50 congregations.

“Many mosques in the surrounding area were affected by the earthquake, besides that survivors also need a more appropriate place of worship. Currently they pray in tents, so as an early recovery response, Dompet Dhuafa initiated a temporary Emergency Mosque here with a semi-permanent concept,” said Feby, Dompet Dhuafa’s LPM (Community Service Agency) team, as the PIC for the construction of the Emergency Mosque in Garogol Kidul Village.

Mr. Udin also recounted the moment when the earthquake happened. At that time, he was farming. Because he was in the field, he still thought that the earthquake did not cause any impact.
“People were panicking, calling me, shouting for help too. When I returned home, it turned out that the house was hit by the earthquake and had collapsed. I’m still traumatized, my 2 (two) year old grandson was killed by the collapsed building,” admitted Mr. Udin.
