Ready to Welcome Eid al-Adha, Dompet Dhuafa Provides Halal Slaughtering Training at Djuanda University

BOGOR — Eid al-Adha is fast approaching, and Dompet Dhuafa continues to emphasize the importance of animal sacrifice to the community. On Friday (May 23, 2025), Dompet Dhuafa collaborated with Universitas Djuanda (Unida) Bogor and Juleha (Halal Slaughterers) to hold a training session on the proper Islamic method of sacrificing animals at Masjid Baitul Hamdi, Universitas Djuanda, Bogor.

This activity aims to educate the younger generation on proper slaughtering methods in accordance with Islamic law, while also serving as a medium for da’wah and the regeneration of halal slaughterers. Anto Langgeng Prayogo, a representative of Dompet Dhuafa, expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm of the participants and the importance of education in the regeneration of sacrificial animal slaughterers.

“We want to provide information or education to young people so they know how to slaughter animals. Regeneration is necessary, especially when it comes to educating people about the proper and Islamic way of slaughtering sacrificial animals,” he said.

Present at the event was Ustaz Sudrajat, a livestock farmer who also served as a training resource person. During the event, he discussed various aspects of sacrificial animal management, including how to handle sacrificial animals from the pen to slaughter, and the slaughtering process, which must be carried out in accordance with Islamic law and without causing unnecessary suffering.

Ustaz Sudrajat also emphasized the importance of understanding the health of sacrificial animals, including post-slaughter examinations (post mortem) to ensure their suitability for consumption.

According to him, these examinations must be conducted thoroughly on parts of the animal’s body that can affect meat quality, so that the public not only understands the proper slaughtering procedures but also has the ability to assess the animal’s overall condition before the meat is consumed.

He also emphasized that the lack of public understanding of the proper slaughtering methods in accordance with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad remains a challenge. It is important for the public to clearly understand the boundaries of how to treat sacrificial animals, so as not to fall into misconceptions.

Furthermore, Ustaz Sudrajat emphasized the correct slaughtering method using the five-finger formula for cattle, while three fingers are used for sheep and goats, emphasizing that the slaughter should be performed below the windpipe to ensure complete death.

“With the five-finger formula for cows, the slaughter is performed below the windpipe. If done above the windpipe, there is a possibility the animal will not die because the blood vessels are still intact. Below the windpipe, the four muscles are severed, so Insha’Allah, the animal dies perfectly with the severing of the windpipe, the trachea, and the two blood vessels known as the vein and artery, all completely severed. Insha’Allah, the animal dies perfectly,” explained Ustaz Sudrajat.

Danu Suryani, one of the training participants, said that this activity provided important insights, especially regarding the ethics of treating sacrificial animals.

“With this training, we can be more careful because it turns out that there are ethical considerations when slaughtering sacrificial animals. The ethical treatment of animals must also be taken into account, so this is a valuable addition for us as organizers. We must pay attention to how the animals are treated before slaughter, even during the slaughter itself, and their psychological condition must also be considered,” added Danu.

This event is a concrete example of collaboration between Dompet Dhuafa and Universitas Djuanda. It is hoped that the knowledge gained by the participants will be shared widely to ensure that the performance of sacrificial rituals in the community aligns more closely with Islamic values.
