JAKARTA — Dompet Dhuafa through Respon Darurat Kesehatan (RDK) rolled out health services for Indonesian citizens from Sudan who were evacuated due to the humanitarian conflict that occurred. A total of 929 Indonesian citizens have returned to their homes after screening at the Pondok Gede Hajj Dormitory, East Jakarta.

The RDK Dompet Dhuafa team provided health services until the survivors’ last day at the Pondok Gede Hajj Dormitory, which was Wednesday (3/5/2023). In fact, this service was present until the last survivor who was assigned to the Pondok Gede Hajj Dormitory. The last two survivors are Rizki Fajar from Jakarta and Muad Rosyid from Solo, Central Java. They are 3rd-semester students in Sudan.

Rizki told Dompet Dhuafa that he had come as a student in Sudan since 2019. However, lectures stopped and only started last year due to the pandemic.

“At that time, there were many choices of Islamic universities in Arab countries, but after exploring various campuses, I chose Sudan. But after that the Covid-19 pandemic, it stopped and now it’s only semester 3,” explained Rizki.

He then told how to repatriate himself until he arrived in the country. On the first day when there began to be chaos on April 14, 2023, he and his friends thought there would only be clashes of civilians protesting. Shortly after, news circulated that the commotion was a civil war conflict.

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Khartoum or Kedutaan Besar Republik Indonesia (KBRI) di Khartoum then appealed to Indonesian citizens to remain in their homes until the official evacuation process came. Until finally on the seventh day, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs began the evacuation process to the country

“We were evacuated on the seventh day. Because it was indeed a sudden conflict, no one prepared in advance. During those 7 days we stayed in each other’s homes. Because the Indonesian Embassy is actually closer to the location of the conflict. So each house is safer,” Rizki said.

Rizki and Muad said they participated in evacuating the second batch along with 73 other Indonesian citizens.

“On the seventh day (the day the evacuation process began the Indonesian citizens), we were directed to gather at a mosque,” he continued.

The evacuation process is divided into several routes. First, it is from their respective residences in Khartoum to Port Sudan. Furthermore, from Port Sudan to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia by boat. After that, he was picked up by plane from Jeddah to Jakarta, Indonesia.

To facilitate evacuation, the Indonesian Embassy appealed to only prepare one bag per person. In addition to the many residents who must be evacuated, the evacuation process will go through several long routes. One backpack was also encouraged to be filled only with important documents, essential items, and a few clothing suits. (Dompet Dhuafa/Muthohar)
