The History of Prophet Noah in the Qur’an

The history of Prophet Noah is described in several surahs of the Qur’an, one of which is in Surah Noah verses 1-28. Allah recounts how Prophet Noah was sent to remind his people to return to worshipping Allah and abandon their destructive behavior. Prophet Noah preached with great patience, day and night, for a very long time.

The Qur’an also mentions that Prophet Noah preached for 950 years. This is written in Surah Al-‘Ankabut verses 14, which reads, “Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, and he remained with them for a thousand years minus fifty years. Then, they were struck by a great flood while they were wrongdoers.”

This verse shows how long Prophet Noah’s efforts were in delivering warnings, long before the disaster actually happened. The warnings came first. The opportunity to change was always open. However, it was humans themselves who chose whether to listen to the warnings or ignore them.

The Great Flood in the History of Prophet Noah

The history of Prophet Noah cannot be separated from the great flood that drowned his people. The Qur’an explains that the flood came after the warnings were repeatedly ignored and rejected. Water gushed forth from the earth and rain fell incessantly, as mentioned in Surah Al-Qamar verses 9–12:

“Before them, Noah’s people also denied (the messenger). They denied Our servant (Noah) and said, ”He is mad!“ He was rebuked (with insults and other things). He (Noah) then complained to his Lord, ”I have been defeated, so help me.” Then We opened the gates of the sky with (pouring) water. We also caused the earth to gush forth many springs. Then all the water gathered together so that it overflowed and caused the disaster that had been decreed.” (QS. Al-Qamar verses 9-12).

The flood during the time of Prophet Noah was not only a punishment, but also part of a series of causes and effects. When humans turned a deaf ear to warnings and continued to destroy the order of life, a great impact occurred. Prophet Noah was commanded by Allah to build an ark as an effort to save the lives of believers, those who were willing to make amends.

The Scale of the Flood in the Time of Prophet Noah

Scholars have different views on the scope of the flood of Prophet Noah. Some scholars, such as Ibn Kathir, explain that the flood hit the area where the people of Prophet Noah lived. This opinion refers to the Qur’an’s focus on the fate of the disbelievers, not the geographical map of the world.

Another opinion states that the flood was very large in scale at that time, even though the Qur’an does not explain the details of the area. Although there are differences of opinion about the scale of the flood during the time of Prophet Noah, the essence of the story of Prophet Noah does not lie in the extent of the water, but in the moral message that we can take away and how we should act as responsible human beings.

The Meaning of Patience in the Story of Noah

The story of Noah also teaches us about patience in the face of rejection. Noah was not only rejected but also mocked by his people. Even so, he continued to carry out his mission without violence or coercion. Noah’s patience shows us that change does not always come quickly. Patience requires perseverance and consistency. In the current context, patience is also needed in efforts to build environmental awareness and social concern. Changing people’s mindsets cannot be done instantly; it requires great patience.

The Relevance of Prophet Noah’s Story to Current Disasters

The story of Prophet Noah serves as a mirror for modern humans. Natural disasters do not occur without a cause. In many cases, environmental damage accelerates the potential for disasters. Damage to nature often results in difficulties that humans must face.

The floods that hit Sumatra today remind us that the signs of damage had appeared long before the disaster occurred. Forest destruction, changes in river flow, and reduced soil absorption are signs that are often ignored. The story of Prophet Noah teaches us that ignoring warnings only increases the risk of difficulties in the future. The preaching delivered for years by Prophet Noah gave his people the opportunity to change. When these warnings were ignored, the consequences became even more severe.

The lessons from the story of Prophet Noah are relevant to this day. Safety is not only determined by whether or not a disaster occurs, but by how humans respond to the signs that are already visible. Behavioral change, concern for the environment, and shared responsibility are the ways to prevent disasters from recurring on an even larger scale.

Human Responsibility in Preserving Life

In the story of Prophet Noah, the ark became a symbol of human endeavor. Prophet Noah did not just wait for help, but also worked and took action. He built the ark with the limited resources available, while remaining dependent on Allah.

The Qur’an teaches that humans have an active role in protecting life. Allah says that destruction on land and sea occurs as a result of human actions, as written in Surah Ar-Rum verse 41, which reads, “Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have wrought. (Through this) Allah makes them taste some of the consequences of their deeds so that they may return (to the right path).”

Social Concern as Part of Faith

The historical story of Prophet Noah also teaches the value of caring for others. Prophet Noah invited believers to board the ark so that they could be saved together. This attitude shows that caring for and helping others is an important part of Islamic teachings.

The Prophet Muhammad said that whoever helps ease the difficulties of others, Allah will ease their difficulties in this world and the hereafter (HR Muslim).
