LAMPUNG – Dompet Dhuafa is pioneering innovations in optimizing Ziswaf funds (Zakat, Infaq, Sadaqah, and Waqf) into programs that benefit the community. Recently, Dompet Dhuafa Lampung launched the Maggotin Program in Karang Anyar Village, Jati Agung, South Lampung, on Sunday (15/10/2023). This initiative is part of Dompet Dhuafa’s environmental efforts aimed at reducing waste, with a particular focus on organic waste.

“I am pleased with the introduction of this program. It assists the government in educating the public and addressing organic waste issues in Lampung. We hope that collaborations like this can be continuously enhanced and sustained,” he stated.

The Maggotin Program is composed of a group of 20 benefit recipients. They will receive training to manage a maggot farm capable of decomposing over 500 kilograms of waste daily. Therefore, in a month, the maggot farm’s potential for organic waste decomposition can reach up to 15 tons.

Herman Budianto highlighted the impressive ability of maggots to rapidly decompose waste. He explained that in 24 hours, 10,000 BSF maggots could decompose 5 kg of organic waste. Maggots are also capable of consuming organic waste amounting to 2 to 5 times their body weight per day.

“Maggotin represents a movement to reduce waste through maggot cultivation. With a focus on empowerment, the Maggotin Program introduces an innovative approach to waste management that can also boost income and support the economy of the benefit recipients,” Herman remarked.

Yogi Achmad Fajar further added to the discussion, emphasizing the extraordinary potential of maggots in managing organic waste. He expressed his hope that this program would serve as a model for zero waste education and spark a movement for home-based waste management.

“We anticipate that this program will set an example, foster zero waste education, and initiate a movement for managing waste from homes,” said the Branch Manager of Dompet Dhuafa Lampung.

Additionally, the Maggotin Program, managed by Dompet Dhuafa Lampung, is expected to be introduced in various other locations in Lampung, particularly in areas with significant accumulations of organic waste, such as markets and landfills.

Deeply moved, Paiman (40), one of the benefit recipients, expressed his and the other benefit recipients’ profound gratitude for the assistance with the maggot farm they received. He had long aspired to decompose organic waste to avoid foul odors and diseases. With the launch of the Maggotin Program, his long-held wish is finally being realized.

“Thank you, Dompet Dhuafa. I am overjoyed. This is like a dream come true, as I have long harbored this aspiration,” he shared with Dompet Dhuafa. (Dompet Dhuafa/Lampung/Rifo/Muthohar)
