Healthcare Workers in Jabodetabek Join Spiritual Power Training to Strengthen Patients’ Spiritual Well-being from LPM

JAKARTA – The pain experienced by patients often has a severe psychological impact, even causing despair about recovery. In such situations, the role of healthcare workers (HCWs) extends beyond providing medical care to offering emotional and spiritual support to help patients navigate difficult times. Recognizing the importance of this, Dompet Dhuafa, through the Community Service Institution (LPM), organized a Spiritual Power Training as part of its Patient Spiritual Guidance Program.

The event took place on Wednesday (July 30, 2025) at the Ibis Harmoni Meeting Room in Kebon Kelapa, Central Jakarta. A total of 57 healthcare workers from 25 hospitals and community health centers in the Jakarta metropolitan area participated in the training. Their attendance demonstrated both enthusiasm and commitment to improving the quality of care provided to patients, not only physically but also spiritually.

In his opening remarks, Waryono Abdul Ghofur, Director of Zakat and Waqf Empowerment at the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, emphasized that spiritual support is an essential element in the healing process of patients. According to him, a spiritual approach provides inner peace that can boost patients’ optimism. This approach, which addresses the inner aspects of a person, has proven to provide positive energy that accelerates the recovery process. Therefore, strengthening spiritual well-being is a valuable asset for every healthcare worker.

“Providing spiritual treatment is important alongside medical treatment. When delivering a diagnosis or providing care, medical personnel must also be able to communicate well and provide spiritual support so that patients can remain optimistic in their fight for recovery,” said Waryono.

Manager of LPM Dompet Dhuafa, Kamaludin, explained that the Spiritual Power training is expected to strengthen the synergy between LPM Dompet Dhuafa and health workers. This collaboration is not merely a transfer of knowledge, but also brings real impact to patients. He also emphasized that this program will continue to be expanded so that its benefits can reach more people.

“We hope this initiative becomes a meaningful collaboration, not only for healthcare workers but also for the patients they care for. Spiritual strengthening will motivate patients to face their illnesses with greater enthusiasm, both during their hospital stay and after returning home,” said Kamaludin.

This Spiritual Power training presents three main topics relevant to healthcare services. The first is a review of psychiatry on life and death, providing an understanding that illness is not the end of everything, but rather part of the journey of life that must be endured with fortitude. Second is Fiqh Maridh (Illness) and End-of-Life Care, equipping healthcare workers with Islamic legal knowledge regarding patients nearing death and how to provide comforting support. Third is Funeral Preparation Between Islamic Law and Tradition, providing guidance on the proper procedures for preparing the deceased according to Islamic teachings while clarifying practices that often blend with tradition.

The material is presented in depth, accompanied by real-life case examples to enable healthcare workers to apply it in their daily practice.

Fitri, Head of Nursing at Khidmat Sehat Afiat Regional General Hospital in Depok, as one of the training participants, said that this activity provided very useful new insights. She highlighted that in many public hospitals, the spiritual aspect is often neglected because the focus of service is more on the medical side.

“This training is very useful for health workers, especially those in public hospitals.

So sometimes the spiritual aspect is somewhat forgotten, and with this spiritual power training, it reminds us that as healthcare workers, we can incorporate spiritual power into our services. It turns out that the role of healthcare workers is very significant in providing the spiritual aspect that patients greatly need,” she said. The Patient Spiritual Guidance Program is an initiative by LPM Dompet Dhuafa to provide healthcare services that address both physical and spiritual aspects.

By strengthening the role of healthcare workers through training such as Spiritual Power, Dompet Dhuafa hopes that more patients will be able to face the challenges of illness with patience, optimism, and inner peace. (Dompet Dhuafa)
