Prayer for having offspring is essential for every newlywed and long-married family who yearns to be blessed with a good child; for a son (sholeh) and a daughter (sholihah) by Allah Almighty. For most couples, having children is the most coveted dream. However, sometimes these dreams take work to realise.
A Test of Patience and Sincerity for Families
Prayers for having offspring are sometimes not practiced or even unknown to married couples. So, when couples do not have children, a lot of pressure comes from the surrounding environment—from questions that may be hurtful to unpleasant views and comments. Theories about the causes of infertility become increasingly complicated and sometimes make couples feel lonely and isolated.
In Islamic culture, having children is essential because children are a gift from Allah to complete the family. So, when couples do not have children, they feel lost and incomplete. What is the Solution to Getting Offspring?
The presence of children in the family is a dream for many couples. Children become trusts and entrustments from Allah Almighty. However, not all couples can quickly get offspring. Sometimes, they must pass tests and continue to pray for the gift of children by praying for offspring.

In addition to consulting a doctor, couples who do not have children can strengthen the bond of husband and wife through prayer and worship. Prophet Zacharias (pbuh) prays for posterity.
The first prayer for offspring was the prayer of the Prophet Zacharias (pbuh) when he asked Allah Almighty to give offspring to him. Prayer for descendants of the Prophet Zacharias (pbuh). It is found in the Qur’an Surah Maryam verses 2-6, which reads:
“What is read is an explanation of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah. That is when he prayed to his Lord in a small voice. He (Zachariah) said, “O my Lord, indeed my bones have been weak, and my head has been covered with grey hair, and I have never been disappointed in praying to You, O my Lord. And indeed, I fear for my relatives after my death, even though my wife is barren, so grant me a child from Your side. Who shall inherit me and inherit from Jacob’s family; and make him, O my Lord, a God.”
Prayers from the Prophet Zacharias (as) can be offered by couples when they are experiencing infertility problems or difficulties in having children. In this prayer, Prophet Zacharias (as) asked Allah Almighty to give righteous offspring as heirs to the family.
Prophet Muhammad’s Prayer to His Companions
The following prayer for offspring was taught by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to his friend, umm Habibah. In a hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught the following prayer:
“Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja’altahu sahla, wa anta taj’alul-hazna iza syi’ta sahla”
It means: “O God, there is no ease except what You have made easy and trouble if You will, You make easy.”
This prayer teaches us to ask Allah Almighty so that He will facilitate all our affairs, including obtaining offspring. We also need to surrender to the will of Allah Almighty and accept all His provisions.

Prayer for Descendants in Surah Al-Anbiya
The prayer for the third descendant is a prayer also offered by the Prophet Zacharias (as) found in the Qur’an Surah Al-Anbiya verse 89, which reads:
“Wa Zakariyyaaa iz naadaa Rabbahuu Rabbi laa tazarnii fardanw wa Anta khairul waarisiin”
And Zachariah prayed to his Lord, “O my Lord, do not let me live alone (without offspring), and You are the best heir.”
Prophet Zacharias (as) taught us to ask Allah Almighty not to live alone without offspring and to ask Allah Almighty to give (shaleh) good offspring as the best heirs for our family.
Doing the Effort Earnestly
As a form of effort for couples who do not have children, prayers for offspring must also be accompanied by concrete steps to help couples deal with infertility problems. Friends need to remember not to worry because God has a good plan for everyone. One of the efforts is to consult a doctor. Doctors can help couples find the cause of infertility and provide the best solution. Many methods can help couples cope with infertility, from lifestyle changes to more complex medical programs.
Friends can also seek support from family, friends, and the Muslim community while undergoing endeavors. Sometimes, infertility can cause couples to feel lonely and isolated. Seeking support from loved ones can help reduce stress and motivate couples to keep looking and trying.

Accompanying the Prayer for Posterity with Alms
Children are very precious sustenance from God. Friends can multiply alms to orphans and people experiencing poverty as one of the efforts to obtain offspring. Alms can multiply one’s sustenance. Sustenance is not only a matter of material. Having children is also a very extraordinary sustenance.
“Behold, those who give alms, both male and female and lend God a good loan, will surely be multiplied (the reward) to them; and unto them a great reward.” (QS. Al Hadid: 18)
